SFA secures their seventh Southland Conference Tournament Championship to go to their fifth NCAA Tournament in the past eight years.
COMMERCE, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin volleyball program faced off against No. 2 seeded UTRGV in their 15th SLC Championship match.
With the 'Jacks holding a slim 7-5 lead early in the first, SFA went on a 5-0 scoring run which included two kills from Ilana de Assis to take a 12-5 lead. After a kill by Nadine Zech, SFA went on another five-point spurt that was punctuated by an ace from Jayden Flynn which moves her to sixth in All-Time Aces in SFA history, 17-6. UTRGV responded with a five-point run of their own to cut the deficit to six, 17-11. The 'Jacks won four of the final six points to take a 25-15 first set victory.
The second set was tightly contested with neither team having more than a three-point lead until the Ladyjacks went on a three-point mini run to take a 12-7 lead. Both teams traded blows the rest of the set, but the 'Jacks continued to extend their lead and secured a 25-19 second set victory off an attack error by the Vaqueros.
UTRGV jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third, but SFA cut the lead down to one with a mini run that was capped off by an ace from Zoe Gun, 7-6. Both teams traded blows until the 'Jacks rattled off three straight points with a kill by Ilana de Assis followed by an ace from de Assis and a kill from Jordan Henderson to take a 23-20 lead late.
