'Jacks Win Thriller Over 'Mavs in Walk-Off Fashion

PHOENIX, Ariz.- Stephen F. Austin defeated UT Arlington in the 'Jacks first game of the WAC Tournament, 6-5. SFA improves to 28-22 while UTA falls to 22-29.
UTA got the scoring started in the top of the third as they took a 1-0 lead. The 'Mavs added another run in the fourth to extend their lead, 2-0. SFA got their bats going in the bottom of the fourth as Sydney Carithers drove in the first run for the 'Jacks with a single up the middle which scored Madison Nguyen, 2-1. Camryn Middlebrook then grounded out to the first baseman, but was able to bring Emily Berryhill home, 2-2. UTA broke the tie in the top of the sixth when they added two runs, 4-2. Middlebrook added another RBI in the bottom of the sixth when she hit a double to right center which scored Mikaelah Burkland, 4-3. In the top of the seventh, UTA retook a two-run lead to make it 5-3 heading into the final chance for the 'Jacks. Lexi Benson tied the game with one swing of the bat, as she blasted a home run over the center field wall, 5-5. In extras, Brooke Gainous pitched a nearly perfect inning to shut down UTA and keep the game tied. In the bottom of the eighth, Middlebrook hit a hard single to the shortstop and then Gaby Garcia hit a double to the gap in right center which scored Middlebrook and walked-off the game for the 'Jacks.
Garcia and Middlebrook led the team with three hits each and they both hit a double. Middlebrook and Benson led the team with two RBIs. Gainous pitched her 13th complete game of the season, allowing 13 hits, five runs and struck out four batters.
With this win, SFA will stay in the winner's bracket and face off against No. 2 Grand Canyon tomorrow, May 11th at 12:00 p.m. central time.
