A Look at the Lumberjacks
SFA has brought themselves back up to a .500 winning percentage at 13-13 after their series win against Sacramento State. The Lumberjacks look to also stay above .500 on the road this next week as they currently have a 6-5 road record.
The Lumberjacks find themselves at fourth in the WAC standings, only one game behind third place GCU, and three games behind conference leader Sam Houston.
After scoring 25 runs this past weekend, the 'Jacks continued to show how lethal they are at the plate. SFA remains tied with GCU in the scoring category with 7.7 runs per game. Alex Rodgers has played a big role at the plate and on the base paths, as he is second in the WAC and 14th in the nation in runs per game with 1.38.
Five Lumberjacks now have a batting average over .300 and eight Lumberjacks over a .250 average. Clayton Loranger continues to lead the way with a .385 average. Loranger also carries the highest on-base percentage on the team with .464, which is partially credited to his team-leading 13 walks.
Garrett Gearner continues to be one of the go-to arms in the bullpen for the Lumberjacks, carrying a 2.35 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 11 appearances on the mound. Gearner's stellar performance on the bump has rewarded him with four wins on the season, which leads the team.
A Look at the Bears
The Bears head into the match looking to turn their season around as they enter with a seven-game losing streak and a record of 9-19. Baylor looks to be more comfortable at home as all of their wins have come at their home field.
The Bears have taken on some familiar foes that the Lumberjacks have either seen this year or are in the same conference as SFA. The Bears collected wins over Kansas State (2) and Sam Houston, while suffering losses from UTSA and Abilene Christian.
This will be the first matchup between the Bears and the Lumberjacks since 2019. In the previous 11 matches between the two teams, Baylor has come away with the victory all 11 times.
Kolby Branch leads charge in the Bears' offense, carrying an average of .345 and an OPS of 1.002. Branch leads the team with 10 doubles and is tied for the team lead of four home runs, which makes up the most extra base hits on the Bears. He is only one of three players to have an average higher than .300 and one of five players to have an average higher than .250.
The Bears' starting rotation has had their fair share of struggles as each of their starters that have five or more starts each have an ERA of 7.90 or more. Those three starters combine for a 1-11 record on the mound.
A Look at the Texans
The season started off hot for the Texas as they were 14-6 in their first 20 games, but as conference play started to pick up, their performance started to decline. The Texans head into the week with a 14-11 record and a 1-6 WAC record. The Texans are also coming in on a five-game losing streak. Like the Bears, the Texans seem to be more comfortable at home as they are 12-3 when playing in Stephenville.
Mason Hammonds and Jack Wagner are the bats to look out for this weekend as both carry a .350+ average and 1.100+ OPS. Hammonds leads the team in doubles (9) and triples (4), while Wagner leads the team in home runs (6). With both players leading the team in walks, 12 and 13 respectively, both of their on-base percentages are right near the .500 mark.
Kooper Shook is a major threat on the base paths as he has 16 steals on 19 attempts and makes up roughly a quarter of the Texans' total stolen bases.
The Texan pitching staff has combined for an ERA of 5.49 and a WHIP of 1.59. Opposing batters have made up a .254 average against the Texans and have only recorded 17 home runs in the Texans' 25 games.
