ARLINGTON, Texas- Stephen F. Austin defeated UT Arlington, 99-93 in double overtime. SFA finishes the regular season with a 25-5 record (15-3 WAC) while UTA finishes with a 14-16 record (8-10 WAC).
The first quarter was competitive as the teams traded blows the entire quarter. UTA held the slight advantage after the first, 16-14. The second quarter was more of the same until the game was tied at 27, then SFA went on an eight-point run off back-to-back three-pointers from Angel Scott and Tyler McCliment-Call. The Ladyjacks went into the locker room with a 40-36 lead. UTA kept the lead under two possessions for the first couple of minutes in the third quarter, but a layup from Jordan Harrison and another three-pointer from Scott brought the lead up to seven with 8:02 left in the third. The Mavericks went on a 7-1 scoring spurt to cut the lead down to one. Kyla Deck made two free throws at the end of the third to make it 58-55 going into the fourth. UTA fought to keep the lead within reach at the beginning of the fourth and kept the Ladyjacks lead from growing beyond six points. The game was tied at 69 with 2:58 left on the clock, UTA took the lead off a layup but then SFA got it right back when McCliment-Call hit a three. The fourth quarter ended with a couple of free throws and a tied score of 73-73.
The Mavs scored the first two buckets of the first overtime and held a slim lead for most of the period. Zoe Nelson tied the game at 83 then Avery Brittingham scored a layup for the Ladyjacks to take their first lead of the overtime period with 19 seconds left. However, a foul by Brittingham put Starr Jacobs at the line. Jacobs hit both of her free throws to tie the game once again at 85-85. Harrison, Kurstyn Harden and Brittingham fouled out in the fourth quarter/overtime. With two minutes left in the second overtime the game was tied at 91, but Scott nailed another three-pointer and then made two free throws to put SFA up 96-91 with 35 second left. That sequence was the nail in the coffin for UTA as they could only score one layup in the final ten seconds of the game.
SFA led UTA in a couple of stats categories including, bench points (38-28), field goal percentage (49.2-37.2), and three-point percentage (39.1-18.8). Seven Ladyjacks scored double figures, led by Harrison with 17. Brittingham followed with 16, then Scott with 15, McCliment-Call and Destini Lombard with 13, and finally Deck with 11. Nelson led the team with 11 rebounds. Brittingham tallied on 10 rebounds as she recorded her seventh double-double of the season. She also led the Ladyjacks with six assists, followed by Harrison and Scott who each recorded four. Brittingham also led the team with four steals and tied Harden for the lead with two blocks.
The Ladyjacks will head to Vegas for the WAC Conference Tournament where they look to defend their title. SFA has earned a first round bye in the tournament which means they will play next Wednesday, March 8th.
