Johnson and Harrison Record Double-Doubles as Ladyjacks Axe the No. 9 Bearkats

LAS VEGAS, Nev.- Stephen F. Austin defeated Sam Houston, 74-59 in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament. SFA improves to 26-5 (15-3 WAC) while SHSU finished their season with a 13-17 (8-11 WAC) record.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after back-to-back three-pointers from Tyler McCliment-Call. SHSU tried to claw their way back, but SFA continued to pull away scoring the final four points of the quarter and went into the break with a seven-point lead. The Bearkats scored the first two buckets in the second quarter to cut the lead down to three points, 18-15. With six minutes left in the first half, the Ladyjacks went on a six-point run with four from Avery Brittingham and a layup from Kyla Deck. The teams traded blows for the rest of the half and SFA went into the locker room with a five-point lead, 32-28. The Ladyjacks went on 9-0 scoring spurt with four points from Aiyana Johnson, a layup from Brittingham and a three-pointer from Angel Scott. The Bearkats fought back at the end of the quarter by scoring the final four points in the third to cut the lead down to nine, 54-45. SFA regained a double digit lead with 7:59 left in the game off a three-pointer by WAC Freshman of the Year, Jordan Harrison. The Ladyjacks hovered around a 15 point lead the rest of the game as they cruised past the Bearkats.
SFA led SHSU in most stats categories including, points in the paint (40-30), points off turnovers (11-9), fast break points (14-8), field goal percentage (46.6-33.3), three-point percentage (45.5.-22.7), and free throw percentage (55.6-53.3). Johnson and Brittingham led the team with 17 points each, followed by Harrison and McCliment-Call with 13. Harrison recorded her second double-double of the season with a team-leading 10 assists, and Johnson recorded her third of the season with a team-leading 12 rebounds. Brittingham also grabbed nine rebounds and had two steals. Kurstyn Harden led the team with three steals.
The Ladyjacks will play in the semifinals on Friday, March 10th at 2:00 p.m. CT as they face off against No. 4 California Baptist.
