NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team approaches their first WAC games of the season, hosting the California Baptist Lancers for a game on Friday and a double-header on Saturday. This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
The 'Jacks are bringing the momentum into the weekend coming off a three-game winning streak that consisted of a walk-off and a no-hitter. The past three wins has brought SFA back to .500 with an 11-11 record. The Lumberjacks are looking for the home-field advantage to play a big role this weekend as they are 6-3 at home so far this season.
Four Lumberjacks enter the series with a .300 batting average, Mikaelah Burkland continuing to lead the way with a .341 average. Madison Nguyen has collected the most hits so far into the season with 22 in 21 games. Sydnee Hebert always has a way of finding herself on base, holding a .534 on-base percentage which leads the conference.
Gaby Garcia, Mackenzie Bennett, and Lexi Benson have been the home run trio for the Lumberjacks. The three 'Jacks have made up all 11 of the SFA homers at this point in the season. Garcia leads the way with 5, Bennett with 4, and Benson with 2.
The Lumberjacks have been a threat on the base paths this season, stealing 37 bases on 41 attempts. Nguyen leads the team with nine stolen bases, Camryn Middlebrook and Mallory Webb follow with seven steals each.
Brooke Gainous is coming off her first career no-hitter against Prairie View A&M and she doesn't look to stop there. Gainous and Alexis Telford look to shut down the CBU bats in the pitching circle and keep their pitching dominance rolling.
A Look at the Lancers
The Lancers head into the series with a 16-10 record and a 2-2 record on their only four games played on the road. They are coming off a two-game win streak, winning two games against Colegate.
Sydney Soto and Priscilla Estrada are base-hitting machines for CBU, both heading into the weekend with a .350 average. Neither have a home run recorded yet this season but look for them to put the ball in play. The 'Jacks will need to be careful with Estrada on the bath paths as she leads the team with nine stolen bases.
The Lancers don't seem to have one power hitter in particular, but anyone in the Lancer lineup is able to hit one out in an instant as six players have a home run this season. Maya Martinez will be one to watch out for as she is one of three Lancers with two home runs and has the highest OPS with .837.
The Lumberjack's are going to have some work to do navigating their way around the Lancer pitching staff. The CBU arms have a 2.39 team ERA and opposing batters have a .230 batting average. Alyssa Argomaniz and Jazmine Castaneda both carry a 1.96 ERA and two complete games each.
