Lumberjacks Sweep Prairie View A&M in Midweek Doubleheader

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Stephen F. Austin defeated Prairie View A&M 7-6 in Game One and 9-0 in Game Two. SFA improved to 11-11 while PVAMU fell to 4-15.
Game 1
PVAMU jumped out to a two-run lead after the top of the first, but SFA came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning after Sydney Carithers hit it over the first baseman's head who was unable to get a handle on it. Sydnee Hebert and Camryn Middlebrook scored to tie the game at two. Mackenzie Bennett hit a two-run home run to center field, to give the 'Jacks a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third. PVAMU tied it up in the top of the fifth and took a two-run lead in the seventh. Middlebrook started the rally for SFA when she was hit by a pitch. Mikaelah Burkland hit into a fielder's choice which scored Middlebrook from third, 6-5. Carithers reached first on an error to put two runners on, then Hope Lusk walked which loaded up the bases. Kelby Robbins pinch hit for Emily Land and reached base on an error by the shortstop which scored Carithers and Burkland for the 'Jacks to walk it off.
Bennett, Carithers, and Robbins each recorded two RBIs. Middlebrook and Bennett each recorded two hits, including a double and home run respectively. Alexis Telford recorded the win with 2.2 innings pitched, and only allowed two hits and struck out two batters.
Game 2
SFA scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back. Those two runs came off of Lexi Benson's bat as she blasted a home run to center field which scored Madison Nguyen as well. The 'Jacks tacked on another run in the bottom of the third when Nguyen hit a single to left field which scored Middlebrook who doubled to right center and then stole third. SFA's offense exploded in the third inning as the 'Jacks scored six runs. Bennett started the inning off singling left field, then Garcia singled, and Burkland out-ran a bunt to load up the bases. Carithers then recorded her third RBI of the day with a single up the middle to drive in Bennett. Sydnee Hebert walked in another run, then Emily Land steps up to bat with the bases still loaded and smokes a single to the shortstop which drives in two more runs. Mallory Webb and Lusk successfully completed a double steal to move up to third and second base. Middlebrook hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the 'Jacks eighth run. SFA's final run of the game came from Nguyen who slapped a single to third base which scored Webb.
Nguyen, Benson, and Land each recorded two RBIs. Nguyen went a perfect 3-3 from the plate while Burkland went 2-3 with one double. Brooke Gainous recorded her first career complete game no-hitter on 62 pitches with four strikeouts.
The Lumberjacks will continue their home stand this weekend against California Baptist, starting on Friday, March 17th at 5 p.m.
