NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball program will take on the Prairie View A&M Panthers for a midweek doubleheader at the SFA Softball Field.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
After a week off from playing, the Lumberjacks return to their home field and look to even their season out at .500 with two wins against the Panthers. In the seven games played in Nacogdoches, the 'Jacks are 4-3.
Mikaelah Burkland holds the best batting average on the team with .353 getting 12 hits in her 34 at-bats. Madison Nguyen has the most Lumberjacks hits with 19 and runs scored with 10.
Gaby Garcia and Mackenzie Bennett carry the big bats for SFA, as they make up eight of the team's nine home runs. Garcia with five and Bennett with three.
Sydnee Hebert has a strong ability to get inside of opposing pitchers' heads and forcing them to pitch around her, as she has recorded 16 walks in 17 games. Her walks has given her a .528 on-base percentage, which is first in the conference.
Alexis Telford has carried the major workload for the 'Jacks in the pitching circle in the 2023 season. In 12 appearances and 10 games started, Telford has pitched 54.1 innings, recorded a 2.96 ERA, 48 strikeouts, only allowed 27 walks, and given up two home runs. Opposing batters have a batting average of .243 against Telford.
A Look at the Panthers
The Panthers come into Nacogdoches with a 4-13 record and a 0-7 record on the road. The Panthers are, however, coming off a three-game sweep against Southern University.
Their record is a good indicator that their offense hasn't had many bright spots this season as the team carries a combined .171 batting average, .259 on-base percentage, and a .458 OPS. The Panthers have recorded only eight extra base hits, those being seven doubles and just one home run. In 17 games, they have only recorded 30 runs scored and 27 RBI's.
The same story goes for the pitching side of Prairie View A&M, as their starters have found very little success. None of their starters have yet to record an ERA of sub-4.00 and combine for a 2-9 record.
