SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico- The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball program continue their non-conference schedule against Morgan State and Boston College as they participate in the Puerto Rico Clasico.
Series
This will be the second meeting between the Ladyjacks and the Morgan State Bears. This is the first meeting since 2018, when SFA defeated MSU, 69-42.
This will be the first meeting between the Ladyjacks and the Boston College Eagles.
SFA Dominates Middle Quarters to Take Down UNT
Stephen F. Austin defeated North Texas 80-49 Wednesday night. SFA improves to 3-1 while UNT falls to 1-1.
The game started off in a close battle between the Ladyjacks and the Mean Green, but then the 'Jacks started the second quarter with a 9-point run and dominated the second quarter 30-9, expanding the lead to 43-21 at the half. The dominance didn't stop there as the Ladyjacks went on to outscore the Mean Green 25-7 in the third quarter with the help of Angel Scott, who went 3 for 4 on 3-pointers in the quarter. The largest lead for the Ladyjacks was held at 41 points (67-26) during the third quarter.
SFA led UNT in nearly every stat category, most notably: field goal percentage (44-34), three point percentage (33-19), free throw percentage (70-38), points off of turnovers (24-3), total rebounds (52-31), second chance points (29-9), bench points (27-7), points in the paint (44-20), and fast break points (16-4).
Scott lead the scoring for the Ladyjacks with 17 points coming from five 3-pointers, followed by Avery Brittingham with her third straight double digit scoring performance, this time scoring 14. Kurstyn Harden is now 4 for 4 when it comes to scoring double digits coming off the bench, scoring 12 tonight. Aiyana Johnson recorded a double-double tonight scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds, she led the team with the 10 rebounds and also with 5 assists.
A look at Morgan State
The Morgan State women's basketball team extended its home winning streak to 11 games, following its 68-46 victory over Saint Peter's on Friday evening at Hill Field House. The win was the Lady Bears' third straight over the Peacocks, who now lead the all-time series over Morgan State, 11-4.
Morgan State improved to 5-0 with the win, which was the Lady Bears' 31st home victory in their last 34 contests on their home floor, dating back to the 2018-19 campaign. Saint Peter's fell to 0-3 on the season.
Ja'Niah Henson scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead three Lady Bears in double figures scoring. Charlene Shepherd scored 12 points and had a game-high nine rebounds and a game-high five assists, while Sunshine McCrae came off the bench to score 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
A look at Boston College
Thanks to a career-high 20 points from freshman T'Yana Todd, Boston College women's basketball downed Holy Cross on Wednesday afternoon, 52-42. The Eagles have won three straight to improve to a 4-2 record.
Todd hit six of her 12 shots and went a perfect 6-of-6 from the line, while the Canadian freshman took over in the fourth quarter with 10 of her 15 second-half points coming in the second half.
Taina Mair scored 10 points to round out the leading scorers and added five assists. Maria Gakdeng and JoJo Lacey each grabbed nine rebounds in the process - a career best for Lacey.
BC trailed by as much as nine points late in the third quarter, 36-27, before putting together a 25-6 run over the last 13 minutes of the game.
The Eagles held Holy Cross scoreless over the last 8:15 of the game to pull out what was a low-scoring affair. BC struggled from the floor but shot 14-of-17 from the line, including a perfect 9-for-9 showing in the final period.
Ladyjacks Ranked First in Preseason WAC Coaches and Media Polls and Aiyana Johnson Named Preseason WAC Player of the YearSFA received nine first place votes, while UT Arlington and Grand Canyon each received two.
Johnson, a graduate student from Lee's Summit, Missouri, started all 32 games for the Ladyjacks last year. She had a .541 shooting percentage, 209 total rebounds, 51 assists, 36 blocks, 17 steals and scored 445 points. Johnson averaged 26.1 minutes per game, 6.5 rebounds per game, and 13.9 points per game.
