LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana --
After a rigid mid-March stretch in Southland Conference play, SFA built upon last weekend's series split with New Orleans to defeat the McNeese Cowboys Friday afternoon, 8-5. The ballgame required extra innings, though, where the 'Jacks scored three runs in the tenth inning to break the 5-5 knot after nine for its first conference road win. The Cowboys were ranked No. 1 in the SLC standings coming into today's game.
THE TENTH
Sean Moore connected on a home run to left field in the tenth to heat up the 'Jacks bats, followed by RBI singles from Chaney Dodge and Clayton Loranger to clear the bases for three runs. The Cowboys were scoreless in the bottom of the inning, unable to string together late offense to match the Lumberjack stamp.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A run didn't appear on the scoreboard until the third inning for both teams, but Cameron Crawford broke the ice by striking a 2 RBI homer to left center to charge in Kyle Cullen, who previously singled to left field. The Lumberjacks led 2-0 after T-3, matched by two hits in B-3 which managed to score a run for the Cowboys.
The 'Jacks marched into the fourth inning with a 2-1 lead, only for Skylar Black to blast another home run to left field to extend the SFA lead to 3-1. The Cowboys matched the momentum with a 3 RBI triple to take its first lead of the game after four innings, 5-3.
Neither team scored in the fifth, sixth and seventh, but Jake Zarrello's RBI single to center field in the eighth brought in Loranger who reached base on a throwing error during his at-bat, with Bryan Burgos reaching base for a fielder's choice RBI to bring in pinch runner Will Long to even the game.
With the game tied 5-5 after SFA stranded two runners on base in the ninth, the Lumberjacks eventually created critical offense in the tenth to notch its second SLC win in a row.
UP NEXT
SFA will be back in action again tomorrow for a doubleheader against McNeese. Game 1 is set for 11:00 a.m.
