Ladyjacks Pick up Fifth 20-Point Conference Win Saturday

NACOGDOCHES, TX -- The SFA women's basketball team got a 28-point showing from the bench on the way to a 67-45 win against the Incarnate Word Cardinals at home Saturday.
The victory improved SFA's overall record to 13-3 and conference record to 6-1.
The Ladyjacks had three players score in double figures, led by Aiyana Johnson, who put together a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Aaliyah Johnson added 11 points off of the bench and Alyssa Mayfield helped out with 10 points and six rebounds off of the bench.
Led by Aiyana Johnson's four offensive rebounds, SFA did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 20 second chance points.
The SFA defense held Incarnate Word shooters to only 30.4% from the field, including 23.5% from three-point range. The Cardinals didn't get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only six offensive rebounds and scored five second chance points while SFA pulled down 29 defensive rebounds.

GAME SUMMARY
After falling behind 13-11, SFA went on a 5-0 run with 2:07 left in the first quarter to take a 16-13 lead. The Ladyjacks then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 19-16 advantage. SFA did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 19 points close to the basket.
SFA kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 5:00 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Aiyana Johnson, to increase its lead to 33-21. The Cardinals cut into that lead, but the Ladyjacks still enjoyed a 35-26 advantage heading into halftime. SFA dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 16 points close to the basket.
SFA continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Marissa Banfield, to expand its lead further to 46-33 with 2:02 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Ladyjacks added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 49-35 edge. SFA played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.
SFA started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Banfield's three, to grow the lead to 59-35 with 6:59 to go in the contest. The Cardinals narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Ladyjacks still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-45 win. SFA took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
