NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Freshman midfielder Peyton Graves delivered a decisive game-winning goal in the 83rdminute of a pitched affair on Sunday, sealing the league win and three points in the standings for the SFA Soccer team. The win improves the Ladyjacks to 4-6 on the season and 1-2 in SLC play, and evens their home record at 4-4 on the season.
Sophia Fondren assisted on Graves' goal, serving in a great ball on a corner kick which was headed into the net by Graves. The corner kick was earned by a stellar individual effort from Katelyn Termini, who stole the ball near midfield, drove towards the net and forced a deflection off an HBU defender to earn the set piece.
OF NOTE
• Fondren's assist was her fourth of the season, tying her for the team lead with Kenady Carlile. It was also the 14th assist of the junior's career, trying her for eighth on SFA's career assists list.
• Graves tallied her third goal of the season and first game-winning goal of her career. She tallied 27 minutes in the contest and recorded two shots.
• Sunday's game marked the first start of the season by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Madeline Talbot, who began the contest between the sticks and recorded five saves, including a leaping denial in the upper left corner of the goal.
• The Ladyjacks outshot HBU 18-12 in the contest, including a 13-4 edge in the second half. SFA also recorded eight corner kicks on the day.
• Up next for the 'Jacks is a pair of road tests at Lamar (Oct. 4) and McNeese (Oct. 6), SFA's first action away from Nacogdoches since the season-opening trip to Charleston, South Carolina.
COACH CRITTENDEN'S THOUGHTS
On his team's effort in securing three points:
"Well I think the level of soccer was very consistent with the second half on Friday. We were a little more patient on the attack, were a little more dangerous in our shots. I still think there's another level of dangerous that we can be in our possession, there's some flank attacks that I think would make us more difficult to play against. We challenged ourselves to get the result within our identity and keeping the effort level where we want it. This team has gone through a lot, but I'll tell you that the rotations and competitive spirit were tremendous once we settled in."
On the second half possession and offensive chances:
"I thought we created a lot of chances in both halves. HBU is a solid team and we each certainly had dangerous chances, Madeline Talbot had a great save in the first half to keep it scoreless. From an offensive standpoint, we met all of the attacking metrics that we keep track of, we've just got to make sure we're a little more patient at times, and willing to take open shots at others. This team is resilient and committed to playing the game the way they're build to play, so that's impressive."
