SFA returns to The Chopping Block Thursday night looking to build on its season-opening win
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University Ladyjacks Soccer is gearing up for its match against the University of Tulsa, scheduled for Thursday, August 20, at 7:00 p.m. at The Chopping Block in Nacogdoches.

SERIES HISTORY
The Ladyjacks currently trail the Golden Hurricane with a series record of 2-4-1. This upcoming match marks the eighth encounter between the two teams, with SFA hosting Tulsa for only the second time in their program's history, as the previous home meeting dates back to 2004. Last season, Tulsa edged out a 3-2 victory over SFA, scoring back-to-back goals late in the second half. The Ladyjacks are keen to capitalize on their home-field advantage this time around.
LAST TIME AT THE CHOPPING BLOCK
SFA began their season with a commanding 6-0 victory over Sul Ross. The Ladyjacks showcased their depth with six different goal scorers: Savanna Oberholtzer, Alyce Chappelle, Carlie Thurmond, Kamrynn Davis, Kensley Smith, and Lucie Platt. The match featured standout performances, including the first collegiate goals for Chappelle, Smith, and Oberholtzer. In total, SFA accumulated 20 points from six goals and eight assists, with contributions from 13 players.
SCOUTING TULSA
Tulsa opened its 2026 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Central Arkansas at home. The win marked the Hurricanes' ninth consecutive victory over the Bears. Tulsa took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute before Central Arkansas responded with the equalizer in the 65th minute. The Hurricanes regained the advantage late in the match when Brooklyn Bumgardner scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute. Currently, Bumgardner and Addison Castleberry lead the team in points with two each as both found the scoresheet against UCA.
Tip of the Cap for Musser
Against Oklahoma State, goalkeeper Brandie Musser made her second career start and first career start against a Power-4 opponent for the Ladyjacks. Musser played all 90 minutes, recording a career-high four saves while allowing three goals against the Cowgirls. Musser made several key saves throughout the match, including an early reaching catch along the goal line that kept the Ladyjacks within striking distance of Oklahoma State during the opening half.
Despite the result, Head Coach Ashley Whittemore praised Musser's performance and growth in goal. "I think this is a huge confidence builder for Brandie. She came out, she knew what she was doing, she was decisive, and her communication was fantastic. At the end of the day, she held on and made big saves that she needed to hang on to, so I'm really proud of her, and I think she is going to continue to go up from here." Musser's performance, leadership and composure throughout the match earned her Woman of the Match honors.
LOOKING AHEAD
Whittemore emphasized the importance of focusing on the details ahead of the matchup with Tulsa, while also drawing on last season's performance for confidence. "We have to focus on the little things that we need to fix. Go back to the film and see it … but also it should give us confidence that we can play with good teams," Whittemore also pointed to the advantage of playing at home, recalling last season's closely contested matchup at Tulsa. "Last year it was really tight in Tulsa, so being at home is going to really help propel us and motivate us," Whittemore stated.

In SFA's season opener, Alyce Chappelle, Savanna Oberholtzer, and Kensley Smith each found the back of the net, accounting for three out of the six goals against Sul Ross; all recording the first collegiate goals of their careers against the Lobos.
