SFA softball earns third-straight conference series win, picks up first league road series of 2019 after lining nine hits and getting 10 strikeouts from Kassidy Wilbur
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – For the second time in three weeks the SFA softball team clinched a Southland Conference series with a decisive game three victory, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-2 Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. Securing their third-straight league series win and picking up their first conference series on the road, the Ladyjacks (21-14, 8-4 Southland) lined nine hits and got 10 strikeouts from freshman right-hander Kassidy Wilbur, who limited the host Islanders (5-29, 2-10 Southland) to just three hits.
Energy and adjustments were key in SFA's game three victory as the Ladyjacks scored in three different innings and collected multiple runs in two.
"Lindsay (Gregory) and Emily (Wolfe) were very tough, coachable and consistent at the plate today," head coach Nicole Dickson said after the win. "I'm really excited and happy about what Bryana (Novegil) did today, her maturity and focus on making adjustments was the spark to the lineup. Our hitters just battled and found a way today. (Kassidy) Wilbur's consistency and competitiveness as a freshman is remarkable. Day in and day out, I know exactly what I'm going to get from her."
After an uneventful first inning, SFA scored a trio of runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. The Ladyjacks got two on to lead off the frame with a pair of hit-by-pitches before a bunt single by redshirt sophomore center fielder Brittany Crawford loaded the bases with no outs. A two RBI single through the left side from junior catcher Lindsay Gregory put SFA ahead 2-0 prior to sophomore second baseman Bryana Novegil knocking in an RBI double into left center field, making it a 3-0 game.
Senior first baseman Margarita Corona led off the top of the third with the Ladyjacks' fourth hit of the afternoon, but SFA couldn't bring anybody across home plate in the inning before scoring a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the fourth. A one-out single to right center field by senior shortstop Emily Wolfe led to Novegil's second RBI of the day, a single through the right side. After a two-out Corona single to the shortstop and then a double steal, Corona reached second as Novegil stole third and scored on an Islander error for the Ladyjacks' fifth run of the contest.
SFA collected its sixth and final run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth following a leadoff single to third base from freshman right fielder Alex Hedspeth and another A&M-Corpus Christi error. An Islander double play on the Ladyjacks' next at bat allowed Hedspeth to score from third base as SFA mounted its advantage to 6-0.
Wilbur and SFA's fielding did not allow an A&M-Corpus Christi hit following a leadoff single in the bottom of the opening inning until the bottom of the seventh. A one-out single to left center field in the final frame began a two-run rally for the home team. After a fielder's choice and a Ladyjack throwing error, the Islanders loaded the bases with two outs on a walk and then scored their only two runs of the day when right fielder Ashley Moss connected on a two RBI single to right field. A caught fly ball in foul territory quickly ended the inning to secure SFA's third triumph of the week.
Novegil finished the game an impressive 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while Corona went 2-for-4. Gregory was 1-for-3 with two RBI as Hedspeth scored twice and went 1-for-3.
Wilbur (12-10) notched her 11th complete game win of the season and 12th overall by fanning 10 of the 29 batters she faced.
A&M-Corpus Christi's Moss had a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with her two RBI. Right-hander Kandace Johnson (4-7) took the loss inside the circle after giving up four earned runs, but striking out four and walking none.
