SFA softball picks up fourth win over Power Five program this season, improves to 8-2 against Texas opponents in 2019
WACO, Texas – Moving to 4-4 on the season against Power Five opposition, the SFA softball team notched its fourth win over a Power Five program this season Tuesday night at the Big 12 Conference's Baylor. The Ladyjacks (22-14) picked up their second true road victory at a Power Five institution this year with a convincing 4-1 win in Waco, Texas, improving to 8-2 against Texas programs in 2019.
SFA lined nine 10 hits in the midweek non-conference road affair and limited the host Lady Bears (15-18) to six, scoring all four runs in the top of the opening inning. In fact, neither team scored following the first inning of action as Baylor collected its lone hit in the bottom of the first frame.
Tuesday night's triumph in Waco marks the Ladyjacks' first win over the Lady Bears since Feb. 8, 2003, and is SFA's first victory at Baylor in 19 years (2000).
"Tonight was all Ashley Kriesel, she controlled the game with a tight zone which shows maturity," head coach Nicole Dickson said after the win. "We were able to capitalize early in the game and score early with (Lindsay) Gregory's two-run base hit. Our defense was tough against Baylor's speed and that was the key as we were able to hold them off until the end. I'm proud of my staff and players getting a road win against a Power Five program tonight. It's definitely something to build off of going into our Lamar series this weekend."
Collecting three of their hits on the night in the top of the first, the Ladyjacks took a commanding 4-0 lead after quickly loading the bases with no outs. Sophomore second baseman Bryana Novegil singled up the middle to leadoff the game, before sophomore designated player Triniti Kendzior reached on a Lady Bear throwing error and senior first baseman Margarita Corona was walked. Freshman right fielder Alex Hedspeth drew an RBI walk to give SFA a 1-0 advantage as Baylor was forced to go to its bullpen.
Junior catcher Lindsay Gregory then stepped to the plated and rocked an 0-1 pitch deep to left field, coming within a few feet of a grand slam. Her two RBI shot gave the Ladyjacks a 3-0 lead with both Kendzior and Corona reaching home plate. Moments later, junior left fielder Madison Clements reached on a fielder's choice for an RBI, allowing Gregory to score after redshirt sophomore center fielder Brittany Crawford had singled down the left field line and senior third baseman Lauren Becker was hit by a pitch. SFA went through its entire lineup at the plate in the first inning of play.
Baylor got runners in the corners in the bottom of the first with one out before the Lady Bears' Taylor Ellis recorded the home team's lone RBI of the contest on a two-out single through the right side, making it a 4-1 score that would hold until the final out of the seventh.
The Ladyjacks would collect two more hits in the top of the second on a Novegil single to the pitcher and Corona single up the middle, however, both were left stranded. Junior right-handed pitcher Ashley Kriesel, who was cool, calm and collective the entire night, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second when Baylor had runners at all three stops with two outs.
Neither team was able to do anything offensively in the third before both squads left a base runner stranded in the fourth following singles. Hedspeth led off the fifth with a double to left center field but a double play and a popup quickly ended any chances for SFA. The Ladyjacks then got back-to-back one-out hits in the top of the sixth thanks to Clements and senior shortstop Emily Wolfe singles but a fly out and groundout left both on the base paths. Corona led off the seventh with a double to right field and the Lady Bears' Lou Gilbert singled to lead off the bottom of the inning, but Kriesel closed out the game by forcing a fly out and groundout.
Following the opening inning, Kriesel allowed no more than one hit in any frame and retired six straight between the second and fourth innings.
Seven different SFA batters recorded a hit in the affair with Novegil, Corona and Wolfe all going 2-for-3 at the plate. Novegil and Corona both scored a run, while Gregory scored and posted two RBI and Clements and Hedspeth finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Kriesel (8-4) earned her fifth complete game win on the rubber and eighth victory overall by striking out two and facing 32 batters.
Baylor left fielder Madi O'Neal turned in a 2-for-3 performance at the plate as Gilbert was 1-for-2 with a run and two walks.
