Ladyjacks Take SEC’s Texas A&M to 15 Innings in Wednesday Night Thriller

SFA softball plays one of longest games in program history, holds Aggies scoreless through 14.2
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Fourteen and 2/3 scoreless innings, one of the longest games in program history, the longest game in the Southland Conference this season (time wise) and the longest game for Texas A&M since 1994. Those were the happenings Wednesday night in College Station, Texas, as the SFA softball team took Southeastern Conference stalwart Texas A&M to the brink in a 15-inning thriller inside Davis Diamond.
A two-out two-run shot over the left field wall by the Aggies' Kelly Martinez in the bottom of the 15th inning gave the home team a 2-0 win after four hours and 16 minutes of action.
Featuring a combined 105 at bats, 30 runners left on base and 23 strikeouts, the lengthy affair saw both teams tally nine hits each.
"It was a really hard-fought battle tonight and we had our chances," head coach Nicole Dickson said after the game. "Mentally and physically we competed. Our pitchers were phenomenal today, the outfield was lights out and our defense had big stops in big moments. There was great energy and effort out there tonight, we just came up short. I'm excited that we can build off of such a strong defensive game going into Houston Baptist series this weekend."
After getting runners on second and third with only one out in the top of the fourth, the Ladyjacks (15-13, 3-3 Southland) best chance to score in regulation innings came in the top of the seventh as SFA lined three hits and loaded the bases with no outs. Senior third baseman Lauren Becker led off the inning with a double down the left field line before Wilbur singled to center field and junior left fielder Madison Clements singled to third base. However, a strikeout, fielder's choice at home plate and a line out ended the top of the frame without the Ladyjacks scoring.
After entering the circle in relief in the bottom of the fourth, freshman right-hander Kassidy Wilbur retired three in order in the bottom of the seventh and SFA held Texas A&M without a runner in scoring position in the eighth. The Aggies (17-11, 1-5 SEC) would get a base runner on second base in the bottom of the ninth but a Wilbur strikeout ended the inning without any damage.
A combined three hits were recorded in the 10th with freshman right fielder Cassidy Tucker doubling to left center field to leadoff the inning. Three quick outs by Texas A&M turned to bottom of the frame, where the home team got runners in the corners with only one out thanks to a double and a single. Wilbur came up clutch once again, fanning a pair of batter to end the inning without the Aggies seeing home plate.
Becker singled to leadoff the 11th before SFA had another scoring opportunity in the top of the 13th. Sophomore designated player Triniti Kendzior singled through the left side to leadoff the inning and then advanced to second on a successful sacrifice bunt by redshirt sophomore center fielder Brittany Crawford. A fielder's choice out at second base put Ladyjack runners in the corners but with two outs a Texas A&M strikeout thwarted SFA's hopes of scoring.
Wilbur would retire 10 consecutive between the 12th and 15th innings, while the Aggies' right-handed reliever Kendall Potts retired the final seven Ladyjack batters in order. The home team began a two-out rally in the bottom of the 15th when shortstop Kayla Garcia singled through the left side, leading to second baseman Martinez' two-run homer.
Kendzior finished the game 2-for-6 as Becker was 2-for-5. Wilbur (9-9) completed the affair with a game-high 10 strikeouts after facing 42 batters in the final 10 and 1/3 innings. Junior right-handed starter Ashley Kriesel was also efficient for the Ladyjacks on the rubber, striking out three and not allowing a run in the opening four and 1/3 innings.
Texas A&M first baseman Baylee Klingler went 3-for-7, while Martinez finished 1-for-5 with her two RBI and run scored. Right-handed starter Kayla Poynter tossed the first six innings for the Aggies, not allowing a run and walking just two with a strikeout. Potts (5-4) collected the win after striking out nine in the final nine innings without walking a batter and giving up just four hits.
