CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The SFA women's basketball continues its conference slate and caps off a three-game road stretch with a midweek bout against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday night in Corpus Christi, Texas. SFA sits atop the Southland Conference standings with a 12-0 league mark (21-3 overall) and will look to maintain its position against the Islanders (12-11 overall, 6-6 SLC). The two will tip off inside the Jack Dugan Wellness Center at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday night in the 24thmatchup in the all-time series between the two and first and only regular season matchup scheduled for the 2018-19 campaign.
Fans looking to watch the bout will find a video stream available on the Islanders Digital Network on a pay-per-view basis. The 'Jacks can also be found on the airwaves via FM 94.7 KVLL, with Bobby Mauro on the play-by-play call. Video highlights and in-game content can be found by following the Ladyjacks on Twitter (@SFA_WBB) as well.
Entering the game on a 13-game winning streak which currently ranks fourth among Division I programs in consecutive games won, the focus for SFA is simply to play the way they have been playing throughout conference play. That entails a devastatingly effective offense which is connecting on 52.6 percent of its shots and averaging 75.7 points per game in league play, while also staking its claim as the SLC's top defensive squad (55.4 ppg). The Ladyjacks have used both to great effect, winning conference games by an average of 20.1 points per game. Fresh off a pair of road victories at McNeese and Northwestern State last week, the Ladyjacks have become road warriors since starting the season 0-3 in true road games and have rattled off seven road wins since.
While seniors Chanell Hayes and Imani Johnson have led the team in scoring with 15.0 and 12.5 points per game, respectively, freshman Stephanie Visscher has had a hot hand of late and just missed out on Southland Conference Player of the Week honors after her torrid stretch in Louisiana last week. The Lulea, Sweden native put up 17.5 points, five rebounds and four assists per game on a ludicrous 88.2 percent shooting clip from the field in the two victories, and has now posted double-digit efforts in four of her last five games. After posting a total field goal percentage of 69.6 in the rout of McNeese on Wednesday, the Ladyjacks hit 62 percent of their shots against Northwestern State on Saturday and now have shot 44 percent or better in 16 games this season.
Heading into Wednesday's matchup with the Islanders, the 'Jacks own a favorable 20-3 edge in the all-time series and have won the last 15 meetings, but last season's win was not without drama. While personnel from both teams has altered slightly, when the teams met last season it was a late three from Kennedy Harris that gave SFA the late lead and a layup from Hayes with six seconds remaining that gave SFA the margin needed to withstand a last second three from the Islanders to win the game, 59-58. Head coach Royce Chadwick is a veteran of the profession in his 35thseason at the helm, and put in quite a few good seasons at the helm of SFA back in 1994-2001.
The Islanders have quietly been one of the Southland's better programs at home this season, owning an 8-4 record there in which they post far favorable numbers versus road play. Dalesia Booth leads the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game, but it was 6-3 transfer forward Alexes Bryant who made waves this past week. The junior set a new Southland Conference and Islander program record with 15 blocks against Sam Houston State, and is averaging 2.5 rejections per game to go along with 10.7 points and 6.7 rebounds.
TIP-OFF TIDBITS
• The Ladyjacks are 4-0 against Corpus Christi in three seasons under Mark Kellogg, with three of the four wins being decided by single digits.
• A win over the Islanders would give SFA its 15th straight Southland Conference victory, dating back to last season.
• Chanell Hayes needs just six points in Wednesday's contest to join the 1000-point club at SFA. She would become the 33rd Ladyjack to do so and join former teammates Taylor Ross, Bretney Branch and Stevi Parker as Ladyjacks to accomplish the feat under Mark Kellogg.
• The Ladyjacks are 26-5 in games played during the month of February in the past four seasons. In that same vein, the 'Jacks are 24-3 on Wednesdays during that same span.
• SFA has three separate players ranking within the top five in the Southland Conference in three-point percentage. Imani Johnson has been the most accurate among SLC players (57.7), while Heaven Hamling (52.0) and Stephanie Visscher (50.0) rank third and fifth, respectively in conference play.
• Visscher also ranks within the top five in field goal percentage (57.7), while classmate Aiyana Johnson ranks first in the league in field goal percentage at 69.7 percent.
