SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The SFA women's basketball team rides a five-game winning streak into a matchup with the 1-14 Cardinals of Incarnate Word on Saturday in what will be the ninth meeting all-time between the teams. SFA is second in the conference standings by virtue of Lamar having played one more game, but has posted a conference-high 13 wins thus far and is a perfect 4-0 in Southland Conference play.
Saturday's game will be a full production of the Southland Conference, with both the women's game and the men's contest thereafter being shown on ESPN3. David Saltzman and the legendary Van Chancellor will provide the call on the broadcast. Fans can also find the Ladyjacks on FM Q107.7, with Bobby Mauro delivering the play-by-play as always. UIW will be putting on "Operation Sellout" to try and fill the McDermott Center for the doubleheader.
The two squads enter the matchup off of vastly different results, as the Ladyjacks are coming off a lopsided victory over New Orleans on Wednesday and the Cardinals, a 74-43 decision to Central Arkansas. SFA's four-game winning streak is its longest of the season, while the Cardinals enter the contest having dropped seven of their last eight games.
On first glance, several numbers really stand out for the Cardinals this season. For starters, UIW ranks last in the Southland Conference in scoring offense (52.8 ppg) and second to last in scoring defense (79.1), leading to a -26.3 scoring margin for the season. The Cardinals are shooting .310/.260/.650 (FG/3Pt/FT) on the season, and also commit and average of 20 turnovers per game as well. Preseason All-Conference selection Imani Robinson leads her squad with 10.0 points per game, while offseason additions Lunden Henry and Star Omozee chip in 7.3 and 8.4 points per game, respectively.
SFA's dismantling of UNO should come as little surprise to fans of the Ladyjacks, as the SFA offense has been red hot in its past three games, all of which were at William R. Johnson Coliseum. In those games, SFA outscored its opponents 251-156 and shot 56 percent from the field and 51 percent from three-point range. During that stretch, the Ladyjacks avenged a Southland Conference Tournament loss to Nicholls, shut down Northwestern State's top-ranked (NCAA D1) turnover forcing defense and held New Orleans below 40 points and opened up its largest margin of victory on an opponent this season (59).
Fielding a young but complete and versatile team, the Ladyjacks have many weapons on the offensive end, all of whom have had their moments to shine this season. Seniors Chanell Hayes and Imani Johnson have been consistent producers on their way to averaging 15.3 and 11.1 points per game, respectively. The Ladyjacks lead the Southland Conference in shooting percentage from the field (54 percent) and from three-point range (48%) in conference play, and are second in overall conference scoring average (78.3).
When the two teams meet on Saturday, the Ladyjacks will be looking for a ninth straight victory in the series in as many chances. The 'Jacks are 4-0 at the McDermott Center since the series began in 2013-14, and every matchup between the two has been decided in SFA's favor by double-digits.
TIP-OFF TIDBITS
• SFA's 59-point margin of victory over UNO was its biggest in more than 20 years and largest since the 1995-96 season, when the Ladyjacks defeated Nicholls by 86 (117-31) .
• SFA's willingness to share and move the basketball is one of its greatest strengths. The Ladyjacks are averaging 18.4 assists per game this season and have registered assists on 74 percent of the 400 made field goals this season.
• SFA has knocked down ten or more three-point field goals in three straight games and has hit at least seven in all but three contests, averaging 8.9 treys per game as a team.
• With 24 points against Northwestern State and 26 against UNO on Wednesday, Chanell Hayes registered back-to-back 20+ point games for the first time in her career, and now has five 20+ games this season.
• With two of its four upperclassmen sidelined for the remainder of the campaign, SFA will rely on one of the youngest rosters in Division I basketball the rest of the way. So far, so good.
