SFA softball run-rules UIW 11-2 in just five innings, earns second consecutive Southland Conference series sweep and third of season
Improving to 27-17 overall and 15-6 in Southland games, SFA's final regular-season road game of the season helped the Ladyjacks to remain tied atop of the league's standings.
A big opening inning yielded seven runs for SFA as the Ladyjacks knocked in four hits during the 20-minute top half of the frame. After its best start to any game this season, SFA never looked back and scored its most runs in any conference game this spring. The Cardinals (12-28, 5-16 Southland) scored a run in both the bottom of the first and second innings but freshman second baseman Bryana Novegil's first career home run pushed the Ladyjacks ahead by nine in the top of the fifth.
"I'm just really proud of how we played this whole weekend," head coach Nicole Dickson said following the series sweep. "I thought our offense really clicked and we were hitting the ball really well today. We seem to be hitting our stride and players are really stepping up. Katherine Thompson and Madison Clements were huge for us today, while Byrana Novegil and Margarita Corona were lights out all weekend."
"In the circle, our seniors Callee Guffey and Makayla Sikes really set the tone," coach Dickson continued. "Guffey was awesome today and really proved herself as a senior leader. This weekend was great momentum wise for us as we have a big series with McNeese next weekend. We're excited to be back in Nacogdoches to face the Cowgirls."
Novegil led off the game with an infield single before senior catcher Taylor Fraccastoro was walked and junior designated player Lauren Becker was hit by a pitch. With bases loaded and just one out, senior right fielder Autumn Holloway reached on a fielder's choice for an RBI. Likewise, senior third baseman Amber Landry reached on another fielder's choice for an RBI, allowing Fraccastoro to score and giving the Ladyjacks a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Moments later, freshman left fielder Katherine Thompson smacked her second triple of the season to right center field, a bases-clearing three RBI hit. SFA took a 6-0 lead in the very next at bat as freshman shortstop Emily Evans grounded out to the shortstop for an RBI, bringing home Thompson from third. Following a two-out single to right field by sophomore center fielder Madison Clements, Novegil doubled to right center for an RBI to give the Ladyjacks a commanding 7-0 advantage.
UIW responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame, getting a single, base-advancing groundout, hit by pitch and then an RBI single to right field from second baseman Lacie Stevens. Senior right-handed starter Callee Guffey notched her first strikeout of the day to end the first with SFA ahead 7-1.
Following a quick top of the second inning, the home team collected its second and final run of the afternoon in the bottom half of the inning. The Cardinals got two hits in the frame, leading off with a double down the left field line before a pair of fly outs and then an RBI single down the right field line by center fielder Marcela Lopez.
A scoreless third inning ensued before the Ladyjacks tacked on a run in the top of the fourth. Corona led off the inning with a single up the middle before Becker bunted her over for a sacrifice. Holloway then reached on a fielding error, which allowed sophomore pinch runner Carley Ruffino to score from second base and make it an 8-2 game.
SFA scored three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth, thanks in large part to Novegil's two-run homer. Thompson led off the inning with a single down the left field line, followed by an Evans sacrifice bunt. After Thompson advanced to third base on a wild pinch, Clements sent a full-count pitch into left field for an RBI single. On a 2-1 count, Novegil clobbered a pitch over the the center field wall for the Ladyjacks' final two runs of the game and the freshman's first long ball of her career.
Novegil led SFA at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Clements finished the game 2-for-2 with an RBI, two runs scored and a walk, while Thompson was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs as Corona had a 2-for-4 afternoon.
Guffey (8-8) earned her eighth win of the season on the rubber, allowing just five hits and striking out two. Sophomore righty Autumn Anderson completed the game, tossing one inning in relief and not allowing a hit.
Lopez led UIW with a 2-for-3, one RBI and one run scored performance as Stevens went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Freshman right-handed pitcher Breanna Hernandez (4-12) went just 2/3 innings but took the loss for the Cardinals after giving up four hits and all seven first-inning runs.
