NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA women's basketball team will play its third straight home game on Saturday night inside William R. Johnson Coliseum, hosting the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University. SFA is 6-2 on the season and 6-0 at home, while Texas Southern comes into the matchup at 3-5 on the season (2-3 away). The game will follow a full day of graduation ceremonies at SFA, culminating with an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
The game will be streamed for free on the Facebook page for SFA women's basketball, which can be accessed by clicking the link above. Live stats will be available as well for fans to follow along with, and the always smooth and energetic call of Bobby Mauro can be found on the airwaves of FM Q107.7.
For SFA, the recipe for success this season has called for two parts offense and one part defense, with strong outside shooting and marksmanship at the free throw line leading the way on offense and active hands holding opponents in check on defense. SFA's streak of games with at least seven three pointers made was snapped in the victory over Montana State, as the 'Jacks san just six attempts from range, but nonetheless are averaging about nine made threes per contest at a 34 percent clip. When they aren't doing their damage at the three-point line, the 'Jacks have had success at the foul line, averaged 15.5 free throws per game on a 73 percent shooting percentage.
As the old adage goes, there's no place like home, and the same motto could be said to describe SFA's play there this season. In six home games for the Ladyjacks—all wins—the team has held opponents to an average of 50.1 points on 32.7 percent shooting from the floor. Combined with an opponent average of 21.5 turnovers per game on SFA's hardwood, those numbers pose a difficult environment for any program trying to steal one inside "the Sawmill".
Leading the Ladyjacks in scoring this season is senior guard Chanell Hayes, who is channeling 15.3 points per game into the Ladyjacks offense on 52 percent shooting from the field and a 50 percent mark from deep. Scoring in double-digits in five of her last six is Imani Johnson, who comes off the first double-double effort of her SFA career in the Montana State victory and looks to build off the 18-point, 10-rebound effort. Her 12.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game are both second on the team this season. Riley Harvey has been another strong standout thus far, earning her third double-double of the season in the Montana State victory and hauling down a team-high 7.5 rebounds per game to go along with 9.9 points.
For Texas Southern, the offense flows primarily through a pair of playmakers in Marquia Turner and Niya Mitchell. Turner, a 5-8 transfer guard from Xavier, leads her team in scoring with 14.4 points per game and is tops among the Southwestern Athletic Conference in three-point shooting percentage (49 percent). Mitchell, a 5-10 forward, is tops on the team in rebounding (7.5 per game) and is second on the squad in scoring with 12.8 points per game on 62.7 percent shooting. As a team, the Lady Tigers shoot 40 percent from the field, 34 percent from beyond the arc and 51 percent from the charity stripe.
