LUBBOCK, Texas – A decades-old series saw its first game played in nearly two decades inside United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas on Wednesday night, as the SFA women's basketball team dropped a 77-69 decision to Texas Tech. SFA moves to 4-2 on the season as a result of the contest, which was the first in the all-time series between the two teams since the 2001-02 season.
Chanell Hayes netted a career-high 27 points, a figure which led both teams in the contest. Imani Johnson added 17 points and Marissa Banfield chipped in 13 points, three assists and three steals for SFA.
"We had a bad stretch at the end of the first quarter and to start the second that cost us", said SFA head coach Mark Kellogg. "We battled hard in the second half to give ourselves a chance to win the game, and I was proud of that effort to get us back into the game. Texas Tech really hurt us in transition and that was the difference in the game. We did some good things and we will get better from this loss."
The Ladyjacks would jump out to a strong 16-8 lead midway through the first quarter of play, with Banfield scoring five quick points and Hayes adding four as the 'Jacks shot 50 percent from the field to open the contest.
A 25-13 scoring edge in the second quarter saw the Lady Raiders pull away from SFA thanks to 76 percent shooting in the frame, a lead they would not relinquish in the second half, despite a late charge from the Ladyjacks.
The Ladyjacks would post a 20-point third quarter on the strength of four three-point baskets in the frame, but the effort was matched by Texas Tech, who kept a 62-49 lead entering the final quarter of play.
A 6-0 run by the Ladyjacks in the early going of the fourth quarter stretched into a 13-3 run over a 3:27 span, cutting the lead to 68-62 with 4:11 left to play. Poised to make a run at the contest, SFA was instead hit with an ill-timed scoring drought spanning over three minutes which threatened to take them out of the game. Undeterred, the Ladyjacks flipped the script and went on a 7-1 run to cut the lead down to just three points (72-69) with 24.9 ticks left on the clock.
That would be as close as the contest would get, however, as the Lady Raiders scored and a three-pointer from Banfield on the ensuing possession rattled out, with the Lady Raiders coming up with the rebound. SFA shot 25-68 (36.8 percent) from the field, 9-29 (31.0 percent) from beyond the arc and 10-12 (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe in the contest. They committed fewer turnovers than Texas Tech (18-26), and turned those miscues into a 28-18 edge in points off turnovers. Texas Tech created advantages in points in the paint (36-22), rebounding (50-35) and fast break points (14-2).
OF NOTE
• The 'Jacks now return home for a three-game homestand, beginning with Saturday's matchup with Wiley College.
• SFA scored 28 points off turnovers in the contest, second only to their win against Morgan State earlier this season for most points off turnovers on the season.
• SFA sank nine three-pointers in the contest, marking the fifth time in six games they have hit at least nine threes.
• With her three made three-pointers tonight, Chanell Hayes needs just seven more made treys to move into the top ten in all-time made three-pointers for SFA, with 119.
