NACOGDOCHES, Texas—For the fifth time this season, the SFA women's basketball team will take to the hardwood inside William R. Johnson Coliseum during the 2018-19 season, as they host the Wiley College Wildcats for the third time in program history. SFA looks to improve on a spotless 4-0 record at home this season, which it has accrued during a dominant run that has further established the reputation of "the Sawmill".
Fans can catch the Ladyjacks in action on ESPN3 with Bobby Mauro calling all the action. Mauro's call will also be simulcast onto the airwaves via FM Q107.7 in the Nacogdoches area and nationwide via the TuneIn app. Live stats are available at the link above. The game is also SFA's annual Toys for Tots game, with SFA's SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) organizing a toy donation for the organization. Any fan that brings a toy valued at $10 or more to the game will receive free admission into the contest.
SFA comes into the matchup having seen its four-game winning streak snapped with a 77-69 loss to Texas Tech in Lubbock on Wednesday. The Ladyjacks came close to scoring the road win with an impassioned run in the game's waning moments, but came up just short. That loss was just the second of the season for the 4-2 Ladyjacks, with both losses coming to Power 5 opponents this season. It also marked the second road loss in as many tries, a stark contrast to the unblemished 4-0 record accrued at home this season. A four-game stretch earlier this month saw the Ladyjacks take down four opponents in eight days in Nacogdoches, including back-to-back wins over Morgan State and Yale in the Preseason WNIT.
Offense has been a steady focus for the 'Jacks in the early going, with unselfish basketball and a pass first mentality leading to an average of 72.3 points per game on the strength of 17 assists per contest. That figure ranks within the top 20 nationally and is above all else a group effort, as no one player is responsible for the majority of the assists. Another dangerous aspect of SFA's offense through the early going has been three-point shooting, as their 9.3 made threes per game ranks in the top 15 nationally, and they have totaled 58 in the first six games.
Chanell Hayes continues to be the point leader for the 'Jacks, as the senior has poured in an average of 18 points per game on high accuracy looks. Her game-high 27 points in the Texas Tech contest was a career-high, and her second 20+ point effort of the season. Fellow upperclassmen Imani Johnson and Riley Harvey have been strong contributors as well, chipping in 10.8 and 9.7 points per game, respectively.
Defensively, the Ladyjacks continue to force turnovers and generate steals, as they force the Lady Raiders into 26 miscues and stole the ball away 14 times, the fourth time this season SFA has generate double-digit steals. Marissa Banfield had three swipes from the point position, while fellow backcourt companion Stephanie Visscher also stole three passes.
Wiley College comes into the matchup with a 2-4 record in the second season under head coach Biance McGee (5-27, 2ndseason). The Wildcats feature three players who score in double figures, led by Armonie Lomax's 14.7 points per contest. Offensively, Wiley has averaged just 68 points per game while shooting just 35 percent from the field and 23 percent form beyond the arc.
