
Ladyjacks Prepare for Midweek Southland Bout with Houston Baptist on Road

SFA looks to extend season-long ten-game winning streak

HOUSTON, Texas – Coming off a big win over rival Sam Houston State in front of a boisterous season-high crowd of 4,182 people on Saturday afternoon, a change of scenery is in store for the Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team. Just as abruptly as the changing seasons, the Ladyjacks leave the comfortable confines of William R. Johnson Coliseum and will head to one of the nation's smallest gymnasiums to face Houston Baptist inside Sharp Gymnasium on Wednesday.

SFA has all the momentum in the world after holding serve for the entirety of a four-game home stretch, including tough wins against fellow Southland leaders Abilene Christian and Central Arkansas, and now sits at 16-3 overall (8-0 SLC) after the win over the Bearkats. The Huskies will look to defend home court, where they have notched four of their six wins this season. Sitting at 2-7 in Southland Conference play, the Huskies are currently tied for the second-worst record in the SLC standings.
One of the smallest Division I basketball arenas in the nation, Sharp Gymnasium has just a 1,000 seat capacity, making for a drastically different gameday atmosphere than the Ladyjacks played in on Saturday. It is there that SFA will look to continue several different streaks, including a four-game road winning streak, as well as a stretch of ten consecutive wins that dates back to a victory on December 16 over Texas A&M-Commerce. Since then, the Ladjacks have made winning a habit, and have proven they have the talent and grit to win games that both come down to the wire and those never in doubt.
After relying on a balanced from a litany of scorers to support the efforts of forward Stevi Parker for most of the early going this season, the Ladyjacks have received a boon from the measure improvement of fellow senior Taylor Jackson at the point, as the Frisco native has scored in double digits in eight of the past nine contests and has become a legitimate threat beyond the arc as well. With Jackson and Chanell Hayes both rising to take the mantle of double-digit scorers alongside Parker, the Ladyjacks have their offense humming along efficiently entering the second half of the conference schedule. Scoring an average of 71.4 points in conference play, the 'Jacks weight in as the SLC's third-best offense this season, while also posting its fourth-ranked scoring defense.
Defense was a strong suit for the Ladyjacks in the four wins the team gathered during the recent homestand, as none of the four opponents posted more than 55 points on SFA, and two were held below 50. By holding the offenses of Abilene Christian and Central Arkansas in check, specifically the trio of talented scorers that led each team, the 'Jacks showed themselves ready to defend scorers that also possessed some size, a result that gives confidence ahead of a matchup with the Huskies' Amanda Johnson tomorrow evening. Johnson, a 6'1" guard, ranks fourth in the Southland Conference with 16.1 points per game, and shoots 44.4 percent from the field and 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the 3-point range.

Despite that shot blocking, however, the Huskies have not kept opponents off the scoreboard, and are allowing the fourth most points per game in the conference at 68.2 points per game.
With an all-time series between the two that is relatively young, the Ladyjacks have nonetheless dominated the series to the tune of a 10-1 edge, with a 5-0 record in SFA's favor on the road. The lone win for the Huskies came in the 2014-15 Southland Tournament semifinal game, as the eighth-seeded Huskies upended the top-seeded Ladyjacks before losing in the title game. Since that loss, SFA has rattled off three double-digit wins in the series, all of which have come under head coach Mark Kellogg.
