LUBBOCK, Texas - Two young pitchers on the Stephen F. Austin softball team dazzled, Autumn Holloway hit a crucial home run and the Ladyjacks beat UTSA and Ohio to open the Texas Tech Invitational on Friday at Rocky Johnson Field.
SFA recorded 14 hits to open the tournament with a 7-3 victory over UTSA on Friday morning and then knocked off Ohio 3-1 in game two. The `Jacks have won three straight games to improve to 7-11 on the season.
Five players notched multi-hit games against UTSA. Taylor Fraccastoro went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and Annie Mehringer went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run, while Alisa Hamilton, Brittany Lewis and Faith Talley each tallied two hits in the opener.
The `Jacks opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Holloway. Mehringer got into scoring position by doubling down the right field line and scored on Holloway's hit.
The Roadrunners took the lead 3-1 with a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning.
Five straight hits to start the third catapulted SFA back in front 5-3. Fraccastoro, Lewis and Talley loaded the bases with three consecutive singles before Lindsay Campbell knocked a double to the gap in right center, scoring Fraccastoro and Lewis. Mehringer capped the big inning with a two-run single to left field.
Talley drove Fraccastoro and Hamilton in after the pair reached on singles in the fourth inning. The two-out single by Talley padded the SFA lead to 7-3, where the score remained until the end.
Makayla Sikes (W, 2-5) grabbed her second straight winning decision with a complete 7.0 innings of work in the circle. She scattered six hits, allowed three runs and fanned three batters on the morning. The second inning was her only blemish as she surrendered just two hits over the other six scoreless frames.
Hits were harder to come by for SFA in game two against Ohio, but Holloway had the one that mattered most. With the score deadlocked at 0-0 in the fifth inning, the sophomore infielder scorched a three-run missile over the left field wall to put the `Jacks on top 3-0. Her first homer of the year sent Mehringer and Taylor LeFlore around to score. Mehringer walked and LeFlore singled to right field to set up the scoring play.
Lewis (W, 4-2) handled things from there to claim the winning decision. She went a complete 7.0 innings in the circle and was charged with just one run on four hits. She walked one and struck out one for the afternoon.
The Ladyjacks will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday when they play McNeese State at 10:00 a.m. and UTSA at 3:00 p.m.
