LUBBOCK, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team split a pair of games on day two of the Texas Tech Invitational at Rocky Johnson Field on Saturday, falling to McNeese State 8-1 before beating UTSA 4-3. The Ladyjacks improve to 3-1 over the three-day tournament with the results.
SFA scored a single run in each of the first three innings on Saturday afternoon against UTSA to jump in front 3-0. Courtney Chambers singled to open the game, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alisa Hamilton and got to third when Taylor Fraccastoro singled to left center field. The `Jacks then executed a double steal with Chambers scampering home after Fraccastoro swiped second.
Autumn Holloway, who belted a three-run home run on Friday to help SFA beat Ohio, stayed hot at the plate on Saturday. She rocketed an RBI double down the left field line in the second inning to put SFA up 2-0. Taylor LeFlore reached on an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch prior to Holloway's at-bat.
Freshman Faith Talley led off the third inning with a double to center field. Annie Mehringer later singled and allowed Talley to touch home by forcing a throw from the UTSA catcher on a stolen base attempt. Mehringer was safe at second and Talley gave the `Jacks a 3-0 lead when the dust settled.
The Roadrunners leveled the game at 3-3 on a three-run home run in the fifth inning.
In the sixth, Hamilton laid down a perfect bunt single that forced an errant throw to help the Ladyjacks push across the go-ahead run. LeFlore walked and Holloway singled to right field early in the frame to put two ducks on the pond with two outs for Hamilton.
Brittany Lewis (W, 5-2) went the distance in the circle, allowing three runs on nine hits in the game. She struck out one batter and got big outs when it counted to earn the win.
The Ladyjacks didn't find as much success in Saturday's opener against SLC foe McNeese State. The Cowgirls scored runs in four of the first six innings and were up 5-0 before SFA could get on the board.
Talley started the fifth inning with a double to center field and trotted home after Mehringer singled to the same field. The RBI made it 5-1, but three more runs by McNeese in the sixth inning put the game out of reach at 8-1.
Fraccastoro went 2-for-3 at the plate to join Mehringer as SFA's offensive leaders in the contest.
Sophomore Callee Guffey (L, 1-2) was charged with the loss when she gave up five runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings.
The Ladyjacks will play Texas Tech on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. to wrap up the weekend invitational.
