NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – The Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team opened their quest for a fourth consecutive Southland Conference title, dominating Northwestern State 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
SFA (5-2-1, 1-0 SLC) got goals from Zuri Prince (18:01), Chelsea Raymond (25:46), Hanna Barker (67:11) and Meghan Corder (88:33), while shutting out the Lady Demons (3-7, 0-2 SLC) in its SLC opener.
“Another good test for our team today on a really hot afternoon on the road to open up conference play,” head coach Wally Crittenden said. “Today we played against a high-pressing and physical Northwestern State that demanded we match a high physical commitment while maintaining our quality. Our kids did a great job at that task and the result was some really great goals by multiple players.
“It feels great to start conference on the right foot and with us playing really well. We will rest tomorrow and then get ready to welcome Lamar for a massive game at home on Friday night under the lights."
The Ladyjacks led NWST 20-6 in shots and 10-5 in shots on goal, as both teams had two corner kicks.
Senior Morgan Glick (3-2-1) made five saves across the full 90 minutes in the net to pick up her fourth shutout of the season.
Prince netted what proved to be the game-winner in the 19th minute, striking from 40 yards out to give SFA a 1-0 lead. The unassisted goal was the third of the season for the native of Beaumont, Texas.
Raymond followed with a goal of her own in the 26th minute, on a feed from sophomore Amanda Doyle, to push her Ladyjack records to 100 points and 44 goals in her career, as SFA took a 2-0 advantage into the break, leading 11-2 in shots.
In the second period, Barker added an insurance goal in the 68th minute, her team-leading fifth of the season, putting the ball over Lady Demon keeper Alex Latham (3-5) in traffic.
Redshirt freshman Meghan Corder capped off the scoring affair, finding the back of the net in the 89th minute for the first career goal en route to the 4-0 final.
The Ladyjacks will retake the pitch on Friday, hosting Lamar in a 7 p.m. match at the SFA Soccer Field for National Lumberjack Day.
