NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Junior Paige Holland finished two kills shy of a triple-double, as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team took down Nicholls State in a 3-2 (25-18, 15-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-8) victory Thursday night inside Shelton Gym.
Holland's well-rounded presence on the court reflected in the stat-line, as she amassed 43 assists, 11 digs and eight kills across five sets. The double-double is third this season for the junior, while sophomore Tori Bates collected her second with 11 kills and 12 digs.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak for SFA (11-8, 3-3), as the Ladyjacks remained undefeated at home.
Despite being out hit by the Colonels (5-13, 2-6 SLC), SFA had four players finish in double-figure kills. The Ladyjacks' offensive attack was led by freshman Kaitlyn Granger and Jacque Allen, who each finished with 12 kills. Bates finished one off of her teammates' pace, while senior Leslie Jackson recorded 10.
Libero OJ Olson managed the back line for SFA recording 23 digs. Olson was one of three Ladyjacks to finish with double-figure digs, joined by sophomore Bates and Holland.
Allen led SFA at the net with four block assists, as the Ladyjacks finished with nine as a team.
SFA hit a .367 clip and got five kills apiece from Bates and Granger to cruise to a 25-18 opening set victory.
After Nicholls evened the match up heading into the break, the Ladyjacks duplicated the outcome of the opening set, getting five kills from Allen, with a 25-18 victory to pull ahead 2-1.
The Colonels held off SFA in the fourth set, narrowly defeating the Ladyjacks 25-23, to force a fifth and deciding set. SFA, after falling behind 18-17, was able to tie it up 23-23 before Nicholls took the next two points to even the match.
The Ladyjacks responded in the fifth, never relinquishing the lead as they took the set 15-8 to seal the victory.
SFA will next welcome McNeese State to Nacogdoches, when the two schools square off at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.
