NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Sophomore Tori Bates recorded her third double-double on the season, as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team improved to 5-0 at home with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-14, 16-14) edge over McNeese State Saturday afternoon inside Shelton Gym.
With the win over the Cowgirls (12-10, 5-4 SLC), SFA (12-8, 4-3 SLC) is two wins shy of tying their 7-0 start at home from the 2009 season and are off to its best start at home since moving from William R. Johnson Coliseum back to Shelton Gym in 2011.
Bates finished with 14 kills and 14 digs, to record her second consecutive double-double for the Ladyjacks. The Allen, Texas, native, collected 12 digs and 11 kills in a 3-2 win over Nicholls State (Oct. 10) just two days prior.
Junior Paige Holland narrowly missed joining Bates with her second double-double in as many matches, colleting 55 assists and nine digs across five sets.
In all, SFA had four Ladyjacks finish in double-figure kills with Bates, Justice Walker (14), Jacque Allen (12) and Kaitlyn Granger (10). Bates, Walker and Allen, also led the presence at the net, recording four block assists apiece. SFA finished with 13 blocks as a team.
Libero OJ Olson led the back line with 16 digs, as junior Janet Hill finished with 10.
MCN never trailed and hit a .323 clip to take the opening set 25-22, but the Ladyjacks flipped the script in the second set with a 25-22 victory of the own to even the match 1-1 heading into the break.
Following another 25-22 defeat to the Cowgirls in the third set, SFA hit a dominating .375 mark in the fourth set and got seven kills from Walker to keep the match alive.
In the fifth set, Walker once again led the Ladyjacks' offensive attack, recording five kills, as SFA prevailed 16-14 to complete the victory.
The Ladyjacks will now take to the road, traveling to Corpus Christi, for a match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
