HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Sam Houston State got 18 points from Britni Martin in the second half to erase a six-point Stephen F. Austin lead as the Bearkats took a 76-66 win over SFA at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Wednesday.
SFA (11-17, 8-7 SLC) got 18 points from Tammara Marion, but it was an eight-minute stretch of the second half that did the Ladyjacks in as they went 8:18 of gametime without scoring a field goal while the Bearkats (16-13, 10-5 SLC) outscored the Ladyjacks 22-6 in that stretch to turn a five-point deficit into an 11-point lead.
The Ladyjacks held a 30-28 lead at the half, and led by as much as six early in the second half before the Bearkats got going. Sam Houston canned nine triples on the night to just four for SFA, three of which were in the first half, and connected on nine more free throws in 37 overall attempts.
SFA outrebounded the Bearkats by 10, and had 10 more offensive boards, outscoring SHSU 26-7 in second-chance points; however, SHSU shot 56 percent from the field in the second half, including 6-for-12 from three-point range.
After falling behind by 11 with just 7:30 remaining, the Ladyjacks looked as though they had another run left in them and got three straight buckets from Jordan Ford to pull back to within six at 60-55, but the momentum all seemed to change when Marion picked up an offensive foul in transition, which sparked a quick 8-2 spurt from the Bearkats that included a pair of triples from Martin that seemingly put the game out of reach with just 2:14 remaining.
SFA concludes the regular season on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. when it hosts Northwestern State at William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game will serve as senior night for SFA's seven-member senior class.
