THIBODAUX, La. - Stephen F. Austin held Nicholls to just two shots and got three goals from three different players Friday to cruise to a 3-0 win over the Colonels. The victory stretches the Ladyjacks' unbeaten streak to 10 straight and keeps SFA on top in the Southland Conference standings.
SFA improves to 11-3-1 on the year and 4-0-1 in Southland play, while Nicholls falls to 6-6-1 overall with an 0-4-0 mark in league action.
"All of the players contributed positively to the team today," SFA head coach Tony Amato said. "It was great to get the shutout on the road. Our backs were very solid defensively."
The Ladyjacks got on the board in the 11th minute when Melissa Gaudet tucked a shot under the crossbar from the top of the 18-yard box.
"Guadet set the tone early with a great strike from distance," Amato said.
The score stayed at 1-0 for the next 27 minutes before SFA's top two scorers struck in rapid succession. Kylie Louw got a cross from Megan Wasiak and scored on a low running shot from just inside the 18-yard box in the 38th minute. That goal broke a tie for the team lead as it was her seventh of the year. It also moved her into a tie for 10th on the SFA career goals list with 13 and makes her sixth all-time at SFA in points with 40.
Just over a minute later, Jordan King pulled back even with Louw on her seventh goal of the season. King set a school record with her third penalty kick goal of the season after Nicholls was called for a handball in the box.
"Kylie and Jordan had quality finishes in the first half which changed the tempo of the game," Amato said. "I was very pleased overall."
SFA was stingy at the other end of the field, tying a season-low by holding the Colonels to just two shots with only one on goal. That's the third time this season the Ladyjacks have limited the opposition to just one shot on goal and marks the eighth straight game for SFA opponents to finish with five or fewer.
Goalkeeper Courtney Bauder (10-3-1) registered the stop on the lone shot on goal and played the first 45 minutes to collect the win. Freshman Lacey Lee played the second half and faced just one shot in 45 minutes of action.
The Ladyjacks will continue their road trip Sunday afternoon when they take on Southeastern Louisiana. The game against the Lions is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Hammond, La.
