NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For a second consecutive game Stephen F. Austin had five players in double figures, and this time it ended with a win. The Ladyjacks (6-6/1-0 SLC) scored a season-high 98 points to defeat rival Sam Houston State, 98-85, Saturday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The victory ended a four-game slide for the Ladyjacks, while the Bearkats dropped to 3-9 on the year.
Junior Jordan Ford led an SFA offense that finished the night shooting 34-of-75 (.453) from the floor. Ford recorded a team-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Classmate Toni Davis returned from an injury suffered in the game against Maine and posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite the Ladyjacks solid shooting, the Bearkats didn't back down. Sam Houston State was equally strong going 36-of-81 (.444), led by Whitney Smith's 23 points and eight rebounds. Smith was one of five Bearkats to finish the game in double figures.
The Ladyjacks utilized a 9-1 run late in the first half to begin pulling away from their guests. SFA took an eight point lead, 43-35, into the locker room. SFA jumped out of the gate quickly in the second half pushing their lead to 21 points, 63-42, with 14:07 remaining in the game. Sam Houston State forced a couple turnovers from its press late in the game to cut the lead down to 13 points, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Despite both teams shooting well from the floor, it didn't always translate into success from beyond the arc. SFA shot 35 percent from the three-point line, while the Bearkats were held to less than 30 percent. SFA won the war on the glass outrebounding Sam Houston State, 51-43.
Junior Tammara Marion scored 19 points and pulled down six rebounds, while senior Whitney Cormier added 15 points and six boards. Junior Ebony Alexander was close to a triple-double scoring 13 points, pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out eight assists.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday when they travel to Conway, Ark., to take on Central Arkansas. The game against the Sugar Bears is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the Farris Center.
