CONWAY, Ark. - Four players finish the night in double figures as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (7-6/2-0 SLC) defeat Central Arkansas, 97-86. It marked the second consecutive night that SFA has flirted with the century mark, and it was the Sugars Bears first setback in the Farris Center this season.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to a 10-point lead after connecting on six of their first 12 shots. SFA's defensive pressure kept the Sugar Bears off balance early connecting on only two of their first 11 shots, but UCA got back in the game by way of the three. The Sugar Bears knocked down four-straight triples to cut the SFA lead to three points, 25-22, with eight minutes remaining in the half.
SFA pushed its lead back to double digits after making a run late in the half. Aided by a technical foul accessed to UCA head coach Matt Daniel, the Ladyjacks closed the half on a run and took a 17-point lead into the locker room. SFA was 19-of-41 (.463) in the opening half, while the Sugar Bears were 11-of-36 (.306).
The Ladyjacks pushed their advantage to as many as 20 points with 12:30 remaining in the contest. UCA focused on freshman Megan Hebert who scored 20 of her game-high 30 points in the second half but it was too little too late. The Sugar Bears were able to cut the Ladyjack lead down to 13 points due to a series of Herbert layups and a Brittney Gowans three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Ladyjacks finished the 37-of-77 (.481) from the floor, and knocked down seven three-pointers. The Sugar Bears struggled to find any consistency offensively finishing the game 26-of-71 (.366). SFA also dominated the glass, 55-45.
Junior Jordan Ford led SFA with 21 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds. Classmate Toni Davis recorded another double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Whitney Cormier added 18 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Courtney Conwright added 15 points. UCA was led by Herbert who finished the game with 30 points and 17 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they will host Nicholls. The game against the Colonels is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
