NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team wrapped up its exhibition season Saturday with a strong showing against Houston Baptist. SFA scored twice in the first half and three times in the second period to take a 5-1 win over the Huskies.
Sophomore Kim Kimmel and senior Megan Cash scored two goals apiece, and Kylie Louw added the fifth.
"We are certainly pleased with the results," SFA head coach George Van Linder said. "We feel like we are making good progress. We still have some things to fix, but preseason has been good so far."
SFA took control with two goals in the first 16 minutes, then all but put the game away with two more scores less than 15 minutes into the second frame. At the other end, the Ladyjacks held HBU to just two shots in the first half and nine for the game.
Kimmel got SFA on the board in the ninth minute when she followed a shot by Brenna Crockett and beat the Huskies' goalkeeper with a high shot. Crockett was credited with an assist on the play.
Cash added to the lead with an unassisted goal in the 16th minute, when she intercepted a cross in the HBU backfield and beat the `keeper one-one-one.
HBU's Ashley Pierce put one in the net at the 40:12 mark to get the Huskies within a goal, and the game went to halftime with SFA in front, 2-1.
The Ladyjacks opened the second period even quicker than they did the first. In the 48th minutes, Kimmel found herself on the receiving end of a nice combo through the box by Cash and Louw, and finished in a net that was all but empty. Cash started the play with a nice ball down the left side of the box for Louw. Louw drew the HBU defense then hit Kimmel crashing in from the opposite side for an easy score.
In the 60th minute, Cash put the ball in the net for the second time. Kayla Mason drove a pass from mid-field into the box, and Cash outran two defenders to turn the corner and take aim. She scored from about eight yards out to give SFA a 4-1 advantage.
Louw finished off the scoring with an unassisted goal. She dribbled out of the backfield past the entire Huskies defense, then beat the `keeper from 12 yards out to set the final count at the 73:19 mark.
For the game, SFA outshot the Huskies, 21-9, and held a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal. Each team recorded four corner kicks.
Courtney Bauder started in net for SFA and played the first half to record the win. Rachael Stelly played the entire second period and posted three saves.
The Ladyjacks will open the regular season on Aug. 23, when they travel to take on Louisiana-Lafayette.
