NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Two days after scoring a season-high eight goals against Nicholls, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team suffered just its third shutout of the year, falling 2-0, to Southeastern Louisiana Sunday. The loss is SFA's first in Southland Conference play, breaking a three-game winning streak.
Sunday's defeat marked the Ladyjacks' first against Southeastern since 2003 and the program's first-ever home loss against the Lions. SFA moves to 6-7-0 on the year and 3-1-0 in Southland play, while Southeastern improves to 9-3-0 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in league competition.
"That was a frustrating loss," SFA head coach George Van Linder said. "Credit them for taking us out of our game. We have to have the discipline to play SFA soccer. At the same point, we had chances to win it and we didn't."
SFA out-shot the Lions, 8-4, in the opening period, but Southeastern took an early advantage with a goal in the second minute. Kyle MacIntosh lofted a crossing pass into the box for Karly Dagys, who scored with a low shot just inside the far post.
The Ladyjacks responded in the fifth minute, when junior Kim Kimmel fired off two quick shots. The second one was on target, but Southeastern goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus recorded the save.
Redshirt freshman Breanne Vernon bounced a shot off the crossbar in the 11th minute, then just missed on a header in the 18th minute after one of SFA's five first-half corner kicks.
The Lions didn't record another first-half shot on goal following their scoring strike and went to halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Southeastern padded its advantage in the 73rd minute, when Maiya Cooper scored on a breakaway. The play started when the Lions quickly cleared an SFA corner kick, and Cooper chased down a long pass from midfield in the 18-yard box. She made a move to get free then chipped a shot over Ladyjack goalkeeper Courtney Bauder to set the final score. Bauder (5-6-0) finished with three saves.
SFA picked up the tempo with time winding down, firing off six shots in the final 10 minutes, but none of them found the mark. Kimmel finished with a team-high five shots, and Vernon added four.
The Ladyjacks will finish their three-game home stand Friday when they host Sam Houston State. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start.
