Ladyjacks Never Trail in 10-Point Win Over UCA

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team got 14 points and 20 rebounds from senior Evelyn Edwards to dispense of Central Arkansas (9-13/3-7 SLC), 64-54, Thursday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The victory bumps SFA to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in Southland Conference action.
The Ladyjacks scored the first bucket of the game at the 19:08 mark of the first half on a jumper from Edwards, and never looked backed. SFA pushed its advantage to as many as 14 points in the opening 20 minutes by shooting 39 percent from the floor, and dominating the glass, 29-17. The Ladyjacks also shut down UCA leading-scorer, Caronica Randle, who scored only two points on the night. Randle entered the contest averaging 19.4 point per game.
Keeping Randle off-balance, along with SFA's continued domination on the glass (29 offensive rebounds), prevented the Sugar Bears from making a serious run in the second half. On several occasions, UCA cut the lead to single-digits, and got within six points, but every time the Ladyjacks had an answer. If it wasn't Edwards doing the scoring, it would come in the form of classmate Charity Egenti, who once again led the team with 17 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds on the night. Freshman Whitney Cormier recorded another strong night scoring nine of her 11 points in the first 20 minutes of action.
SFA finished the game 24-of-73 (33 percent) from the floor, but did a great job of neutralizing the Sugar Bears' offense. Central Arkansas was held to 20-of-59 (34 percent), and also turned the ball over 18 times. The Ladyjacks also recorded one of their best nights on the glass outrebounding UCA, 58-39.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to face Northwestern State. The game against the Sugar Bears is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from Prather Coliseum.
