Ladyjacks Drop Five-Point Decision at UNO

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Freshman Decreasha Goodner scored 21 points in her collegiate debut, but it wasn't enough as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team lost its season opener at New Orleans, 74-69, Sunday night in New Orleans.
The Ladyjacks struggled offensively to open the game knocking down only 7-of-25 (28 percent) shots in the opening half. While New Orleans shot 33 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, the Lady Privateers used their advantage on the glass to take a five-point lead, 29-24, into the locker room. New Orleans out rebounded SFA, 28-15, in the opening half.
SFA picked up the pace offensively in the second half knocking down 16-of-30 (.533) shots, but was unable to gain an advantage as the Lady Privateers picked up the pace as well. UNO shot better than 40 percent in the second half to finish the game 25-of-67 (.373).
The Ladyjacks' defensive pressure was up to its usual tricks forcing the home team into 20 turnovers, and holding the Lady Privateers to a 2-of-15 (13.3 percent) performance from beyond the arc. For all its effort on the defensive end, any advantage SFA tried to gain was neutralized by its own miscues. SFA finished the game -1 in the giveaway/takeaway category.
The Lady Privateers utilized their experience in the low post against the Ladyjacks' youthful front line. UNO won the battle on the glass out rebounding the Ladyjacks, 52-35, and blocking six shots.
Goodner finished the game 6-of-12 (.500) from the floor, and went 9-of-12 (.750) from the free throw line. Sophomore Whitney Cormier seemed to pick up where she left off last season scoring 15 points on 5-of-11 (.455) shooting, and pulling down a team-high six rebounds. Freshman Jordan Ford scored nine points, while junior Natashia Green scored eight points and pulled down two rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday night when they host Grambling State at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game against the Lady Tigers is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m., and is a scheduled doubleheader with the SFA men's basketball team.
