
Ladyjacks Record Impressive Win Over Grambling State

NACOGDOCHES - Freshman Jordan Ford scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Stephen F. Austin past Grambling State, 95-57, Tuesday evening a the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Freshman Decreasha Goodner added 21 points on 5-of-10 (.500) shooting as SFA improved to 1-1 (.500) on the season. The loss dropped Grambling State to 1-1.
Goodner got SFA out to a quick start scoring five of the team's first eight points. She helped SFA jump out to a double-digit lead by scoring 14 first half points. Then it was time for Ford to take over as she closed the half on a similar flurry to how Goodner opened the half. Ford scored 16 first-half points on 6-of-12 shooting, and led the team with six rebounds.
SFA went into the locker room with its biggest advantage of the half, 51-27. Despite knocking down 9-of-22 (.409) shots in the opening half, including some key three-pointers, the Lady Tigers couldn't overcome SFA's defensive pressure. SFA forced Grambling State into 15 first-half turnovers, which the Ladyjacks cashed in for 21 points. Grambling State was only able to force SFA into one first-half miscue.
It was more of the same for SFA in the second half. The Ladyjacks pushed their advantage to as many as 41 points and were never seriously threatened in the second half. Junior Jessica Gaines added to the Ladyjacks' offensive onslaught by scoring a career-high 13 points. She finished the game only one rebound shy of her first career double-double.
SFA dispensed of their visitors with a balanced attack. Along with Goodner, Ford and Gaines, three other Ladyjacks finished the game in double figures. Junior Natashia Green scored 11, while senior Nikki Carr and sophomore Whitney Cormier each added 10 points.
SFA finished the game shooting 39 percent from floor, and held the Lady Tigers to a 19-of-52 (.365) performance. The Ladyjacks dominated the glass out rebounding Grambling State, 60-40. SFA also had an advantage in points in the paint and second-chance points. The Ladyjacks out scored GSU, 36-14, in the paint, and 35-11 in second-chance points.
The Ladyjacks did an outstanding job of holding onto the basketball being forced into only eight turnovers, while forcing Grambling State into 28. SFA was able to turn those 28 turnovers into 37 points.
SFA returns to action Friday when it hosts Tulane. The game against the Green Wave is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
