HAMMOND, La. - Freshman Whitney Cormier scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks to a 78-53 victory over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon in Hammond, La. The Ladyjacks are now 10-5 on the season and improve to 2-0 in league play, while the Lady Lions fall to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
The Ladyjacks scored on their first offensive attempt when senior Charity Egenti hit a layup to give SFA a 2-0 advantage. SFA then went cold from the floor missing their next six attempts. But the Ladyjack defense didn't allow Southeastern Louisiana an easy look at the basket, as the Lady Lions started the game 0-for-12 from the floor. The Ladyjacks eventually got hot hitting four straight, and seven of their next 11 to build a 12-point advantage before Southeastern scored its first points of the game.
The Lady Lions cracked the scoreboard when Kristy Carlin knocked down a jumper with 13:02 the clock. SFA didn't let up, extending its advantage to 18-2. SFA built its lead to as many 25 heading into halftime, 49-24. SFA never looked back in the second half building its lead to as many as 33 points.
The Ladyjacks shot 32-of-65 (.492) from the floor, while allowing the Lady Lions only a 29-percent performance. SFA also dominated the glass outrebounding the Lady Lions, 54-34.
Egenti finished the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Nikki Carr added 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Senior Natalie Kizzee came off the bench to add 10 points and three rebounds. Freshman point guard Martina Holloway led SFA with eight assists.
SFA returns home to host Lamar Thursday, Jan. 11. The game against the Lady Cardinals is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
