SFA Falls to Lady Cardinals

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team got 28 points and eight rebounds from senior Charity Egenti, but it wasn't enough to get past Lamar. The Lady Cardinals recorded an 81-71 victory Thursday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum to hand SFA its first conference loss of the season. The Ladyjacks are now 10-6 on the season and 2-1 in league action.
Despite Lamar's 10-of-24 (42 percent) shooting performance in the first half, the Ladyjacks were able to gain and hold the advantage. SFA led by as many as 10 points in the first half and took an eight-point lead into the locker room, 31-23. The Ladyjacks maintained the advantage on defense. Despite shooting only 35 percent in the opening 20 minutes, SFA outrebounded their opponents by four and forced Lamar into 15 first-half miscues.
The Ladyjacks led by as many as 16 points in the second half before the Lady Cardinals rallied. Lamar got hot in the second half knocking down 19-of-28 (68 percent) shots to spark a 24-11 run to tie the game at 54 with 7:26 remaining. LU was led by Alexis Timpone who hit 6-of-7 three-pointers and finished the game with 22 points. Brittany Williams added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Cardinals.
Leading by one, 57-56, Lamar went on a 10-2 run to build a 10-point advantage, 69-59. Senior Natalie Kizze knocked down a layup with 1:16 on the clock to cut the lead to seven points, but Lamar hit its free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Egenti was one of three players in double figures for SFA. She was joined by classmate Evelyn Edwards who scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Freshman Whitney Cormier added 10 points and five steals.
SFA finished the game 23-of-62 (37 percent) from the floor, while the Lamar shot 56 percent (29-of-52). The Ladyjacks forced Lamar into 27 turnovers during the game.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they host McNeese State. The game against the Cowgirls will begin at 6 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
