Ladyjacks Receive Career Performances in Victory

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks got a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds from junior Nikki Carr Saturday afternoon to defeat Sam Houston State, 96-66, in Huntsville. The victory improved SFA to 12-6 (.667) on the season and 4-1 (.800) in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks opened the game converting seven of their first nine attempts, and 11-of-its-first-16, from the floor to build an early double-digit advantage, 22-9. The Ladyjacks built their advantage to as many as 22 points in the opening half behind 12 first-half rebounds from senior Charity Egenti. Egenti finished the game with points and nine rebounds. The Ladyjacks took a 45-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
SFA went into the break leading after a nearly flawless first half. The Ladyjacks were 19-of-33 (.576) from the field in the first half and outrebounded the Bearkats by eight. SFA forced Sam Houston State into 14 first-half miscues, and held them to a 12-of-31 performance from the floor.
The Ladyjacks were never seriously challenged in the second half, building its lead to as many as 32 points. SFA was able to maintain its advantage behind some strong play from it guards. In addition to the career-high 22 points from Carr, freshman Martina Holloway added career-high seven points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Senior Jennifer Simpson also recorded the first double-double of her career with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
SFA finished the game with one of its best shooting performances of the season connecting on better than 50 percent from the field. The Ladyjacks were 35-of-69 (.507) from the floor, while holding Sam Houston State to 24-of-68 (.353).
The Ladyjacks dominated SHSU on the glass outrebounding its hosts, 54-35. SFA also forced the Bearkats into 21 turnovers.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday when they return home to host Texas State. The game against the Bobcats is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
