NACOGDOCHES - Senior Charity Egenti scored 27 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team to a 63-47 victory over Texas State Thursday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The come-from-behind victory boosted SFA to 13-6 overall and 5-1 in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks struggled out of the gates shooting only 23 percent (7-for-31) in the first half, and trailed 26-16 heading into the locker room. SFA was also out rebounded by 10 in the opening half. But whatever struggles the Ladyjacks had in the first 20 minutes were left in the locker room during halftime.
The Ladyjacks opened the half on a 16-6 run to tie the game at 32 with 14:30 on the clock. SFA took its first lead of the half just over a minute later and never really looked back. Texas State tied the game momentarily and SFA rattled off another big run to build its advantage to nine points, 47-38, in front of the partisan crowd.
SFA picked up the defensive pressure forcing the Bobcats into 14 of their 27 turnovers during the second half. The Ladyjacks were able to cash those turnovers in for 22 points. The Ladyjacks also dominated the glass in the second half, outrebounding the visitors by seven for the game. SFA built its lead to as many as 20 points in the second half before cruising to the 16-point decision.
Junior Nikki Carr nailed some key three-pointes in the second half and finished the game with 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Senior Evelyn Edwards added eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday, Jan. 27, when they travel to Arlington, Texas to face UTA. The game the Lady Mavs is slated to begin at 4 p.m. from Texas Hall.
