
Late Surge Leads to SFA Victory

NACOGDOCHES - Senior LaToya Mills scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team to a 61-53 victory over Louisiana-Monroe Thursday night in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks improved to 15-6 (.714) overall and stay atop the Southland Conference with 9-1 league record.
After jumping out to a 15-6 lead early in the first half, the Lady Indians fought back to take a two-point lead, 21-19, with 6:35 remaining before halftime. ULM held its lead, taking a one-point advantage into the intermission.
It remained a close game early in the second half with ULM scoring on one end and the Ladyjacks matching it on the other. The Ladyjacks finally made their run with 8:33 on the clock. Senior Kendria Smith sparked a 7-0 SFA rally over the next 1:25 of the contest, with a layup to score to of her six points. Smith also recorded two rebounds and two blocks. The Ladyjack pushed their advantage to as many as 13 points behind some timely shooting and solid defense.
The Lady Indians made one final run to cut the SFA lead to four points, 57-53, with 36 seconds remaining, but it was too little too late as the Ladyjacks recorded their fourth straight victory.
Senior Kirby Killingsworth finished the game with nine points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Classmate Britany Vinson added six points and eight rebounds, while junior Charity Egenti scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to Thibodaux, La., to face Nicholls State. The game against the Lady Colonels is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from Stopher Gym.
