Ladyjacks Outlast UTSA

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team knocked off Texas-San Antonio, 77-68, Thursday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The victory propelled SFA to 17-7 (.708) overall and keeps them tied a top the Southland Conference standings with a 11-2 (.846) mark.
The game shaped up as a back-n-fourth affair as neither team could gain more than a four-point advantage in the first half. The opening half consisted of six ties and 10 lead changes. The Roadrunners had a four-point lead, 22-18, with 7:32 remaining in the half but the Ladyjacks went on a 7-0 run to claim a three-point advantage with 6:14 remaining. UTSA rebounded to take a two-point advantage before the Ladyjacks closed out the half with an 8-1 run, sparked by senior LaToya Mills' 14 points and eight rebounds, to take a 33-28 lead into the intermission.
The Ladyjacks pushed that lead to seven points, 35-28, early in the second half but couldn't hold the momentum. The Roadrunners' Vivian Ewalefo led a UTSA charge with her game-high 18 points and nine rebounds as the visitors rattled off eight unanswered points to reclaim the lead.
The game remained close for the next 9:20 before the Ladyjacks went on another run sparked by junior Charity Egenti's 16 points. Trailing by a point with 6:56 remaining the Ladyjacks went on a 12-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 68-59, with only 2:32 remaining. The Roadrunners put SFA on the line to stop the clock, but the Ladyjacks hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the nine-point victory.
Junior Jennifer Simpson scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the victorious effort. Sophomore Nikki Carr added nine points on 3-of-5 (.600) shooting. Senior Britany Vinson and freshman Anitria Mosley each scored eight points.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to San Marcos, Texas to take on Texas State. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m. from Strahan Coliseum.
