SAN MARCOS, Texas - Freshman guard Anitria Mosley came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points, as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team knocked off Texas State, 60-54, on the road in Strahan Coliseum Saturday. Mosley was one of three Ladyjacks to score in double figures, and she did it in only 16 minutes of action.
The win improved SFA to 18-7 on the season and 12-2 in Southland Conference play, while Texas State fell to 15-10 overall and 7-7 in league action. The Ladyjacks are tied with Texas-Arlington for first place in the SLC. The Lady Mavericks kept pace with a 58-33 home win over Southeastern Louisiana.
The Ladyjacks opened up an 11-point lead midway through the first half, but Texas State closed to within five (32-27) by halftime, and SFA could not shake the Bobcats, who stayed in the game by converting 23 Ladyjack turnovers into 17 points. The Ladyjacks never led by more than 11, and Texas State held a three-point lead as late as the 5:20 mark in the second half.
But the Ladyjacks came through with a solid 76.5-percent showing from the foul stripe in the second half. Mosley spearheaded that effort, going 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Senior Kirby Killingsworth was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line and finished with 11 points. Junior Charity Egenti scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field.
The Ladyjacks shot 35.1 percent for the game, edging Texas State's 34.4-percent showing. SFA outrebounded the Bobcats, 54-43, led by Egenti's nine boards. The Ladyjacks held a decisive edge at the free throw line, where they shot 68 percent for the game against just 45 percent for Texas State.
SFA will return to action on Wednesday, March 1, with a road game against Louisiana-Monroe. The contest is set to tip off at 7 p.m.
