TAMPA, Fla. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks got 16 points and 11 rebounds from junior Nikki Carr but it wasn't enough as Massachusetts rallied for a 71-63 victory Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Best Western Roundball Classic in Tampa, Fla.
The Ladyjacks built a 14-point first half lead behind solid shooting, great defense and crashing the boards. SFA was able to hold that lead taking a 37-25 lead into the locker room. The Ladyjacks shot 42 percent, outrebounded UMass by two and forced the Minutewomen into 13 first-half miscues on their way to the double-digit lead. But everything that went right for SFA in the first half, went in favor of UMass in the second.
Massachusetts immediately shaved points off the SFA lead when Tamara Tatham scored three consecutive buckets for the Minutewomen. Tatham scored all 15 of her point in the second half. She also finished the game with 10 rebounds. Katie Mills added 12 points and six rebounds.
UMass shot over 50 percent in the second half, while the Ladyjacks were held to 23-of-63 (37 percent). The Minutewomen also outrebounded SFA by five in the second half to win the rebounding war, 39-36. The Ladyjacks were also forced into 15 turnovers for the game, after only having six at the intermission.
Senior Charity Egenti finished the game with 14 points and nine rebounds, while classmate Evelyn Edwards added 10 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore points guard Anitria Mosley scored eight points and dished four assists.
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday to face the loser of the South Florida/St. Francis (NY) game. It is slated to begin at noon (11 a.m. Nacogdoches time) from the Sun Dome.
