TAMPA, Fla. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team got a career-high 13 points from freshman Whitney Cormier to defeat St. Francis (NY), 64-53, Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Best Western Roundball Classic. The victory propelled SFA to 3-3 (.500) on the season.
Trailing by as many as four points in the second half, Cormier provided a spark for the Ladyjack offense that helped them rally for the victory. Cormier recorded consecutive steals to spark a 7-2 run that put SFA back in front. Cormier scored 11 of her 13 points, and recorded four of her five rebounds in the second half of the game.
The Terriers tried to respond by getting the ball into their 6-7 center Katcha Bavendam. She finished the game with 16 points, but the Ladyjacks attacked Bavendam on the drive, forcing her into foul trouble, and eventually out of the game. With Bavendam out of the game, the Terriers lost their low post presence and the Ladyjacks slowly began to take control of the game.
Although SFA struggled from the floor, 22-of-59 (37 percent), including an 0-of-8 performance from beyond the arc, and turned the ball over 25 times, the Ladyjacks were able to make their breaks on the defensive end. SFA held the Terriers to a 15-of-51 (29 percent) shooting performance and forced St. Francis into 29 miscues. The Ladyjacks also outrebounded St. Francis by 10, 46-36.
SFA got 12 points from senior Evelyn Edwards and sophomore Anitria Mosley. Edwards also grabbed nine rebounds. Junior Nikki Carr chipped in nine points, while senior Charity Egenti added eight points and nine rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Dec. 2, to face Centenary. The game against the Ladies is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
