Ladyjacks Bounce Texas State

NACOGDOCHES - In a showdown between the top-two scoring teams in the Southland Conference, it was the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team that dominated, knocking off Texas State, 82-49, Thursday night in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The victory improved SFA to 11-5 (.688) overall and a perfect 5-0 in Southland Conference play. The Ladyjacks have now won six straight, and 10 of their last 12 games.
The Ladyjacks continued to their hot shooting Thursday night hitting 32-of-66 (.485) from the floor, including a 9-of-21 (.429) performance from beyond the three-point arc. SFA also attacked the glass out-rebounding the visitors from San Marcos, 45-39.
SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley has been stressing defense to her team over the past couple of weeks and she saw the fruits of her labor Thursday night. The Ladyjacks held Texas State to a 14-of-55 (.255) performance from the floor, and allowed the league's top three-point shooting team only three field goals from beyond the arc. The Ladyjacks also forced Texas State into 22 turnovers, which SFA cashed in for 23 points.
The Ladyjacks dominated in the low post, outscoring the Bobcats, 34-18, behind senior LaToya Mills' 16 points and five rebounds, despite playing only 22 minutes. Classmate Britany Vinson came off the bench to lead SFA with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-8 (.750) shooting.
SFA led by only three points, 13-10, early in the game when they went on a 8-2 run to build a nine-point advantage. The Ladyjacks pushed that lead to 14 points, 38-24, heading into halftime and were never seriously challenged in the second half. The Ladyjacks led by 36 in the second half before recording the 33-point victory.
Senior Kirby Killingsworth scored 11 points on 4-of-7 (.571) shooting. Junior Evelyn Edwards and freshman Natashia Green came off the bench to add eight points. Edwards also pulled down team-high eight rebounds.
SFA returns to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to San Antonio, Texas, to take on UTSA. The game against the Roadrunners is slated to begin at 2 p.m., from the Convocation Center.
