
SFA Splits With UTSA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks staged a late inning rally Saturday afternoon at the Coy Sims Softball Complex to take a 5-4 win away from the Roadrunners of UT-San Antonio in game one of a Southland Conference doubleheader before falling in the nightcap, 7-2.
SFA (8-16, 2-9) rallied with a three run seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4 then scored a run in the bottom of the eighth for the win. UT-San Antonio (20-11, 4-1) opened game one with a three run first inning on a three-run home run off the bat of Jennifer Davis and held the 3-0 lead until they added a run in the top of the fourth to go up, 4-0.
The Ladyjacks then picked up their first hit of the game with a solo home run off the bat of Tara Hersey to cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth. SFA then came alive with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings. Tara Hersey started the rally with a one out double followed by an RBI single by Ragen Rutherford. Kristina Swart then drew a walk before an RBI single by Nicole Carter to make the score 4-3. Jessica Tullos then delivered a single through the middle to drive in another run and tie the score at 4-4.
SFA won it in bottom of the eighth when Carrie Woydziak singled to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice, then went to third on a wild pitch. Tara Hersey then walked to put runners at the corners before Ragen Rutherford laid down a perfect bunt to score Woydziak on the squeeze play.
Nicole Carter (2-5) picked up the win in game one working 6.1 innings in relief of starter Traci Moore. Carter allowed one run on seven hits and struck out six.
Game two saw the Roadrunners break on top early, building a 3-0 lead before the Ladyjacks picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning following a single by Tullos with one out. She then stole second and later scored when Crystal Dahlquist reached on a throwing error by the second baseman.
UTSA iced the game with a four run sixth inning to move out to a 7-1 lead. Julie Morse (3-5) took the loss in the nightcap after going 3.1 innings and giving up three runs on four hits. Moore worked 1.2 innings in relief and allowed four runs on four hits. Carter closed out game two with two innings of scoreless relief.
The two teams wrap up the three game series Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ™
