
Ladyjacks Survive Scare at Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team escaped the Gold Dome Saturday afternoon with a 95-86 win at Centenary. The victory improves SFA to 5-4 on the season and drops Centenary to 1-7.
Despite losing an eight-point advantage and falling behind by three points in the first half, the Ladyjacks utilized a strong shooting performance to recapture the momentum in the first half and go into the locker room leading 48-41. SFA was 16-for-29 (55 percent) in the first half, but the Ladies out rebounded SFA and took advantage of some critical Ladyjack turnovers to stay in the game.
The Ladyjacks came out in the second half and built a nine-point advantage 72-63, with 9:05 remaining in the game behind senior LaToya Mills' 27 points and 13 rebounds and classmate Kendria Smith's 17 points and four blocks. But Centenary had an answer outscoring SFA, 14-0, over the next 3:15 to take a four-point advantage behind Laura Way's 21 points and 11 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks fought back to tie the game with 2:15 left in the contest. Smith banked a 10-foot jumper off the glass and Centenary's Holli Wilkins was whistled for the foul. Smith hit her free throw to complete the three-point play and give SFA back the momentum.
The Ladyjacks outscored Centenary, 9-0, over the final two minutes to post the final tally. SFA finished the game 32-of-61 (53 percent), but were out rebounded by four, 39-35.
Sophomore Nikki Carr scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds, while senior Britany Vinson added 10 points and dished out four assists. Freshman Anitria Mosley scored a career-high nine points on 3-of-4 shooting, and dished out a team-high five assists. Mills also tied a school record by going a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., to take on the Golden Hurricane. The game against Tulsa is slated to begin at 7 p.m., in the Reynolds Center. -SFA-
