SFA Splits Doubleheader with Nicholls State

NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team split a Southland Conference doubleheader with Nicholls State Saturday afternoon, winning game one by a 2-1 score in 12 innings and dropping the nightcap, 3-0. SFA (10-14,1-3) and Nicholls State (6-11,2-6) will wrap up the three game series Sunday with a single game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
It took 12 innings for the 'Jacks to pick up the win in game one as both teams waited until the seventh inning to score a run. Nicholls State scored in the top of the seventh inning following a leadoff single. The runner was moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single off the bat of Jamee Henry.
Trailing 1-0, SFA answered when Ragen Rutherford led off the inning reaching first base after being hit by a pitch. Brooke Chandler came on to pinch run for her and scored when Lee Lara tripled home the game-tying run one out later. Lara was stranded at third base after pinch-hitter Kacie Rees struck out and Nicole Carter fouled out the catcher.
Neither team could score in the first four extra innings before SFA finally broke the tie with a run in the bottom of the 12th. Carrie Woydziak was placed on second base to start inning and was moved to third when Rutherford grounded out to left side. Chelsea Lundberg then singled her home for the game winner.
Nicole Carter pitched 9.2 innings for SFA allowing one run on three hits while striking out six. Crissy Autry came on in relief and worked 2.1 innings and did not give up a hit in picking up the win. Diane Meier went the distance for Nicholls State pitching 11.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits.
Autry started game two for SFA and went the distance in taking the loss as she was touched for three runs on four hits. She walked two and struck out six. Nicholls State scored a run in the second on a lead-off triple by Clouatre who later scored on a ground out by Nichole Wagner. The Colonels added two more runs on an inside-the-park home run by Sarah Eads in the fifth inning.
SFA could not find the answer against Nichole Wagner in game two as she scattered four hits in shutting out the 'Jacks. Tara Hersey had two hits for SFA in game two with Carrie Woydziak and Nicole Carter picking up the other two hits for SFA.
